Three years after the tragedy of 3 July 2022, when the detachment of a large serac at high altitude caused an avalanche of ice and debris which claimed 11 victims, ground penetrating radar and drones returned to the Marmolada to investigate the Punta Penia glacier. The same technologies that explained the collapse of 2022 have been focused on a new objective: catching signs of instability to prevent future tragedies. The same methodologies will be extended to Adamello, the largest glacier in the Italian Alps. The glaciological-geophysical working group for the study of the Marmolada includes the University of Parma and the University of Padua, with researchers from the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (source University of Parma and Padua).
