The blue in crescendo, if he wins the Monegasque tournament he will become number one in the world again
Another top level performance and another final won. For the first time in his career Jannik Sinner will play the final of the Monte Carlo tournamentthe last Italian to do it and win it was Fabio Fognini in 2019. Sinner also dominated the semi-final with the German Zverev, beating him 6-1,6-4 with a devastating first set and a more balanced second in which the South Tyrolean optimized the first break point which was also match ball. Sinner’s two final shots were spectacular, especially the backhand along the line that put Zverev at the net which led him to have two match balls. “I’m very happy, I came here looking for answers and feedback. Every day is different, but today I felt very, very solid from the start, playing well from the baseline.”
The assault on Alcaraz
The Principality tournament could give back Sinner takes first place in the ATP rankings. The South Tyrolean had a very positive week with only one small accident during the match with the Czech Machac which cost him the only set lost in the tournament (in the tie-break). For the rest, the first week on clay, a surface that Sinner has never loved, was very positive with a crescendo of performances from the Italian tennis player. And the match with Zverev demonstrated once again how clear the distance is at the moment between the top two in the world, Alcaraz and Sinner, and the rest of the tennis players. To overcome Alcaraz and become world number one again Sinner may not need to win the final if the Spaniard is eliminated by Vacherot in the second semi-final. But from Jannik’s words at the end of the matches it is clear that he would like to take back the scepter by beating the Spaniard: “I think Carlos is the favourite, even if Vacherot is playing very well and is improving. I wake up every morning and train to become number one in the world again. I would like to play the final against Alcaraz, it would be an excellent opportunity to compare ourselves before Roland Garros“.
