On 15 August in Montecassino the chalice donated by Pope Leo XIV enters the Pontifical Mass of the Assumption for the first time
In Montecassino, in the province of Frosinone, August 15th is the day in which the faith of the monastic community and that of the population of Cassinate seem to find a common point, around the altar of the Basilica dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. This year, however, a new element is added. In fact, for the first time the chalice donated by Pope Leo XIV on the occasion of his private visit to the Abbey, which took place last 20 July, will appear on the celebration table.
The chalice, in the Catholic liturgy, is the container of the Eucharist. Bringing it to the altar in a Marian solemnity therefore means loading it with a very specific meaning: that of a communion that crosses time, binds places and generations, and transforms a recent event into part of a much longer and more complex history.
The celebration of August 15th
The Pontifical Mass will begin at 10.30 am in the Basilica Cathedral of the Abbey. The Abbot Dom Luca Fallica will preside over it. There Schola Cantorum «Montis Casini» will accompany the liturgy, while the Icon of the Virgin will be displayed in the presbytery for the veneration of the faithful. At the end of the Mass, in the Chapel of the Assumption, the singing of the “Salve” will close the morning celebration. In the afternoon, at 4.30 pm, the second Vespers will be sung in Gregorian chant, as will the first Vespers of the Solemnity, scheduled for August 14th.
The feast of the Assumption in Cassinate
The devotion to the Assumption in Cassinate has very painful roots. In 1944, among the ruins of the bombings, the statue of the Madonna was found intact. The following year, while malaria threatened a population already marked by the long war, that same statue was carried in procession on 4 August 1945. News reports of the time report that in the following days, as if by a miracle, the epidemic stopped. A devotion was therefore consolidated around that event which accompanied the rebirth of a devastated territory.
This is the context in which Leo XIV’s chalice arrives on the altar. Not as an isolated object, therefore, but as a sign that sees the weight of destruction and reconstruction on the one hand; on the other, an Abbey that looks ahead, towards 2029, when the 1500 years since its foundation.
The role of the chalice of Pope Leo XIV
The monastic community has chosen light as a guiding image for this Jubilee journey. A choice that symbolizes a place that has known destruction and then rebirth. Dom Luca Fallica he indicated in the Virgin Mary a light capable of supporting those who live in the shadows of fatigue, confusion and fear. The Assumption, in this reading, is not just a feast in the liturgical calendar, but a living memory that questions the present.
The chalice donated by the Pope is placed exactly in this space: between the past that cannot be erased and the future that must be prepared. A gift received, treasured and finally offered to the celebration. The sign of a Church that remembers its origins.
