Once again it was Paola Egonu, who is playing a fantastic European Championship, leading Italy to success by scoring twenty points. After the difficulties they had against Sweden, this time the Italians started with maximum concentration and in the first two sets they made practically nothing mistakes. The distraction of the third set, conceded to Poland, was just a moment of blackout which the Velasco girls overcame brilliantly by winning the fourth set very clearly (25-16) demonstrating their clear superiority over their opponents.
Decisive wall
The decisive block was Italy’s winning weapon in the first two sets as the statistics explain very well: 7 points from the block in the first set and 4 in the set perfectly explain the effectiveness of the Italians in this fundamental. The addition of Szczurowska in place of captain Stysiak revived Poland in the third set, but it was only an illusion for Lavarini’s team which was overwhelmed by Italy in the fourth set. Twenty-first consecutive victory in a major event: Egonu reached 20 points (53% in attack), Danesi 13 (73%): the best blocking performance of their European Championship with 18 winners.
