Auto TPL: a blow of over 2 billion for Italian motorists in two years

Increase after increase in two years the blow has reached over 2 billion euros. Italian motorists saw the average price of the car insurance policy go from 353 euros in January 2022 to 414 euros in September 2024. This means a 17.3% increase in costs (61 euros for insurance coverage). There are 32.9 million cars insured in Italy, therefore over 2 billion euros of losses, according to Codacons data. And this despite the fact that the number of accidents is decreasing.

According to the report on provincial data collected by Ivass (Institute for Insurance Supervision) the record belongs to Rome, where the average policy rose from 379.7 euros at the beginning of 2022 to the current 483 euros, equal to +27.2% and an increase of 103 euros per insured. Cagliari follows, where the 22.5% increase led to an average expense of 79 euros more per policy. Other cities with notable increases include Pordenone (+21.5%), Massa-Carrara and Caltanissetta (both +21.3%). Among the provinces with the highest car insurance costs, Prato stands out for the most expensive average policy, equal to 601 euros (+19.2% on January 2022). Naples follows with 595 euros, but with a lower percentage increase (+11.6%). On the opposite side, Enna maintains the lowest average with 294 euros per policy. The study shows that only in four Italian provinces did the increase in car insurance rates remain below 10%. The Calabrian provinces appear to be particularly “virtuous”: Reggio Calabria saw an average increase of 4.4% (equal to 17.4 euros more per policy), followed by Cosenza (+7.9%) and Catanzaro (+8 ,6%).

Increases which, however, go hand in hand with a reduction in accidents on Italian roads, which therefore does not seem to justify the boom in tariffs. According to Aci-Istat data, 166,525 accidents occurred in Italy in 2023, marking a decrease of -3.3% compared to 2019. Deaths and injuries also decreased by -4.2% and -6.9%. respectively Why, then, in the face of a decrease in claims, do insurance costs continue to grow?

On the profits front, Ivass recorded strongly growing profits for insurance companies, which in 2023 reached 8 billion euros, an increase of 249% compared to the previous year. This is also where the consumer association’s request comes from for an in-depth investigation to ascertain the causes of these increases, which have a heavy impact on Italian families, and proposes more careful monitoring of the sector to protect consumers.
