London approves the Tobacco and Vapes Bill: to ease the pressure on the National Health Service and create a “healthier” country, cigarettes will be banned forever for new generations
UK bans cigarettes for young people. And the ban will be for life. The bill, called Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which was approved yesterday by the British Parliament, promises a historic change destined to create a “smoke-free generation”. And while we await the formal green light from the Crown, the initiative is already causing discussion.
How the ban works
The recipients of this “turning point” are young people born after January 1, 2009. The sale of cigarettes, heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes will in fact be prohibited forever to this segment of Generation Z and subsequent generations. This is a radical measure since the threshold is not based on a certain legal age set to be able to purchase the products, but the ban will accompany these generations throughout their lives. If until now the purchase was allowed to eighteen-year-olds, the bill instead establishes that the legal age for buying tobacco increases by one year every year. The leader of Reform UK, Nigel Farage, who was strongly against the measure, explained how it worked well. A month ago, in an editorial on Telegraphwrote: «How should the ban work? Ten years from now, a 27-year-old will not legally be able to purchase cigarettes, but a 28-year-old will. A decade later, 37-year-olds will not be considered old enough to smoke, while 38-year-olds will be able to do so freely. And so on”. The risk around the corner is that the illegal market will take hold. The official reasons communicated by the British government concern health: creating a “healthier” non-smoking country and easing the pressure on the National Health Service. In this regard, the Secretary of State for Health, Wes Streeting, said: «This is a historic moment for the health of the nation, as the bill on tobacco and e-cigarettes concludes its parliamentary process» given that «prevention is better than cure». It should be remembered that the creator of the initiative in 2023 was the then Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. But the plan was put on hold before the 2024 election.
Restrictions on “vaping”
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill It also aims to change the habits of those who “vape”. Britons will no longer be able to smoke e-cigarettes anywhere: the vaping ban will affect cars with children on board, playgrounds, hospitals, as well as outdoor areas of schools. Consumers will therefore be able to “vape” at home, in pub gardens or in larger open spaces. Furthermore, ministers will also be able to regulate the market of e-cigarettes and other nicotine products, especially with regard to flavors and also packaging. The aim is to reduce the appeal of these products to minors, who are often attracted by flashy packaging and all kinds of flavours.
The criticisms, the risks and the promises
Some electronic cigarette manufacturing companies were against the bill. A narrow range of flavors and reduced product availability could encourage former smokers who now use e-cigarettes to return to the classic cigarette. We Vape founder Mark Oates added: “It is vital that the Government protects e-cigarette flavourings, which remain the most effective incentive for adult smokers to switch to a less harmful alternative.” Farage is promising to sweep away this bill if elected. Also in the editorial of Telegraphcommented: “I can promise that the smoking ban will not last long if Reform UK has a chance to start rebuilding our badly run country.” And he added: “There are other, much more effective and civil ways to prevent young people from starting to vape and smoke, thus protecting their health for decades to come.”
