The Roman tennis player advances to Monte Carlo with a sensational success over the Russian. In the round of 16 they will face the winner of the match between Fonseca and Rinderknech
“It was probably the best match of my career.” Matteo Berrettini gives a sensational 6-0,6-0 to the Russian Daniil Medvedev and reaches the round of 16 of the prestigious Monte Carlo tournament. An exhilarating match for the Roman tennis player as well as anomalous for the Russian who had never lost among professionals without winning a single set. In 49 minutes at Centrale Monte Carlo the game was played practically only in the first minutes when Medvedev, who started aggressive and very confident, had two break points. Let’s talk about the dawn of the match, the first game. Berrettini canceled the two break points for then string another eleven consecutive games while the Russian got more and more nervous, he made mistakes in everything that needed to be done and at the beginning of the second set he smashed a racket by slamming it and landed several times to the cheers of the audience. In reality, those who chose to spend the morning on the Central Stadium of the Principality tournament didn’t have much fun: it was a monologue from Berrettini, concentrated on his game without worrying about what was happening on the other side of the net. It’s not the first time that Medvedev flies into a rage when the shots don’t land as he would like, this time he exaggerated enough to get a disciplinary sanction for unsportsmanlike behavior which will be followed by a heavy fine.
Matteo happy
“It was a strange match, I didn’t expect to play so well and I didn’t expect him to struggle so hard it was one of the best matches of my life – comments Berrettini on the pitch -. I suffered in the first game, but then I didn’t expect to win so clearly. I tried to stay focused and not get distracted by what was happening on the other side of the pitch. In the second set he served with new balls, I was good and I immediately broke the serve and I relaxed completely. The reality is that I need matches like these, I just need a bit of time and confidence”. Berrettini hasn’t lost a game so far: 4-0 and retirement of his opponent Bautista Agut in the first round, 6-0 6-0 today against world number 10 Daniil Medvedev, who had never lost so clearly in his career. In the next round Berrettini will meet the winner of the match Fonseca-Rinderknech.
