Car bomb in Moscow, General of the General Staff killed as the war enters day 1,397

A bomb attack in Moscow kills Russian general Fanil Sarvarov. The Kremlin points the finger at Ukraine, while attacks continue on the front

A car bomb exploded in Moscow killing Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, senior officer of the Russian General Staff and head of the army’s operational training directorate. The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday in an urban area of the capital, marking one of the most serious blows suffered so far by the Russian military away from the Ukrainian front.

According to the Russian investigative commission, the bomb was placed on the general’s car. Among the hypotheses being examined is the involvement of the Ukrainian special services, even if at the moment there are no official claims. The investigators are analyzing the images of the surveillance cameras and collecting the testimonies present at the site of the explosion.

Sarvarov, 56, was promoted to the rank of general in May 2024 by decree of President Vladimir Putin. His killing represents a disturbing signal for the Kremlin: the conflict with Ukraine no longer remains confined to the front lines, but directly strikes the heart of the Russian capital.
