Starting from Thursday 23 January, new increases in the prices of cigarettes, cigars and chopped tobacco will begin. The Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) announced the measure, publishing on its website the complete list of affected products, with the related cost variations. The increases do not affect all brands and vary depending on the product, with significant differences between the various items.
These increases are the result of provisions introduced by the 2023 budget law, subsequently modified with that of 2024. The government has decided to intervene by increasing the tax burden on cigarettes, increasing the various components that determine the final price to the consumer. In particular, the 2023 budget envisaged an increase of last year 28.20 euros per 1,000 cigaretteswith a further increase set at 28.70 euros per 1,000 cigarettes starting from 2025. However, the most recent budget law introduced upward adjustments: for 2024, the increase was brought to 29.30 euros for 1,000 cigaretteswhile from 2025 we will move to 29.50 euros for 1,000 cigarettes.
The increases
Among the most well-known cigarette brands, the increases involve brands such as Marlboro, Philip Morris, Merit, Diana and Chesterfield. For cigarettes, the average price increase is around 20 cents per package. Some types of Marlboro and Muratti thus reach i 6.50 euros for a pack of 20, while the Diana remain the cheapest, with a price set at 5.30 euros per package.
Even for cigar lovers there is no shortage of price increases: those who prefer the “Antico Toscano Sigaro Nostrano del Brenta 1763 Italiano” will have to face a price of 14.80 euros for a pack of 3 pieces.
All the new prices are available on the website of the National Tobacconists Federation, and the new price list is also available on the Customs Agency website.
