The American president announced a ten-day truce, as well as the start of talks between Jerusalem and Beirut
We may be at the beginning of a turning point in the Middle East. Donald Trump has in fact announced a ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
“I just had an excellent conversation with the highly respected President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, and with the Prime Minister of Israel, Bibi Netanyahu. These two leaders have agreed that, in order to achieve peace between their countries, they will formally begin a ten-day ceasefire,” the American president said on Truth. “I have tasked Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Rubio, along with Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Razin’ Caine, to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve lasting peace. It has been my honor to resolve nine wars around the world, and this will be my tenth, so let’s do it!” he added. “I will invite the Prime Minister of Israel, Bibi Netanyahu, and the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, to the White House for the first significant talks between Israel and Lebanon since 1983,” he concluded.
“When Israel’s greatest friend, President Trump, acts alongside us in close coordination, Israel cooperates with him,” Netanyahu was quoted as saying Ynet. “We at Hezbollah will carefully respect the ceasefire, provided that it is a complete cessation of hostilities against us and that Israel does not use it to carry out assassinations,” Hezbollah declared for its part, while the Lebanese Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, welcomed the truce. “As I congratulate all Lebanese on this achievement, I pray for the fallen martyrs and reiterate my solidarity with their families, the wounded and citizens forced to flee their cities and villages,” he said.
In short, this is a potentially significant turning point. First of all, the American president managed to broker a truce on a very hot front, such as the Israeli-Lebanese one. Secondly, it is likely that this ceasefire could help break the diplomatic deadlock between Washington and Tehran: in fact, it is no mystery that the Iranians have always asked to include the Lebanese dossier in a possible agreement with the United States. Let us remember that, in recent days, it was Trump himself who stopped Netanyahu in the bombings carried out on the Land of the Cedars.
Now, in addition to trying to mediate a real peace between Jerusalem and Beirut, the occupant of the White House has the opportunity to relaunch the diplomatic initiative with Tehran: Pakistani general Asim Munir – his close ally – has in fact met with the president of the Iranian parliament Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf precisely to try to organize a second round of talks between Washington and the Islamic Republic. In this sense, it is quite obvious that Vance and Rubio will represent, for the White House, the link between the two interconnected diplomatic fronts: the Iranian one and the Lebanese one.
But that’s not all. Who knows whether the new ceasefire might contribute to bringing Trump and Leo On the other hand, last year, the attempt to achieve peace in Ukraine led to a convergence de facto between Pope Prevost and the American president. Among other things, who knows whether the Lebanese turning point might help mend the relationship between Trump and Giorgia Meloni: a Giorgia Meloni who welcomed the ceasefire. “The announcement of a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel is excellent news and I congratulate the Lebanese and Israeli governments for achieving this important result thanks to the mediation of the United States,” he said.
Finally, if the ceasefire in Lebanon holds and leads to a turning point in the Iranian crisis, Trump could try to recover internal consensus, to strengthen the Republican Party in view of the Midterms. Of course, at the moment everything is hanging by a thread. And the unknowns are numerous. However, those who in recent days have done nothing but talk about a Trump who is crazy or totally without a compass, perhaps should start to think again.
