“Real males” is the new Netflix series that dismantles (with irony) the myth of the Alfa male
It only arrived on Netflix for a day, and already makes everyone talk: “Real males”Italian adaptation of the Spanish series “Machos Alfa”is the new Guilty Pleasure that was missing in our Binge-Watching catalog. Produced by Mattia Roverethe series consists of eight episodes who face the theme of male roles in today’s society with irony and rhythm.
Other than war of the sexes: “Real males” It is a tragicomic reflection on what it means to be men in the era of patriarchal deconstruction. Four forty -year -old friends, children of the generation xsuddenly find themselves out of time: close between the imagination from Capobranco and the need to reinvent themselves in a world where the rules of the game have changed – and a lot.
Plot of “real males”: the 4 protagonists
We are in Rome today. Mattia, Massimo, Luigi and Riccardo They have been friends since the times of the University. Over 40, apparently made at work and in private life, exchange messages on a chat called – ça va sans say – “”Real males“, And they are regularly seen for Padel games and tragicomic confidences.
Maximum (Matteo Martari) is the director of a TV network, fascinating, arrogant and nostalgic of the Telegatti era. But his Vintage Media sexism leads him to the dismissal in the trunk, replaced by a more alarm (and current) colleague. To pay the mortgage of the villa with swimming pool thinks about it his wife Daniela (Laura Adriani), influencer in ascent that sponsors animal products with her beloved dog. The digital success of his wife is a low blow for the husband’s ego in decline.
Mattia (Maurizio Lastrico), divorced tourist guide, is still in love with his ex -wife (Nicole Grimaudo) who left him for the family doctor. With the help of the teenage daughter Emma (Alice Lupparelli), who creates a Tinder profile, tries to return to the world of appointments. Spoiler: it’s not good. Mattia declares herself feminist but goes on tilt when she meets women who don’t want to wait for the second exit to go to bed or, worse, when she discovers that her daughter is openly bisexual.
Luigi (Pietro Sermonti) leads the bus of Rome and is married to Tiziana (Thony), driving instructor. After 15 years, two children and one million attempts (between viagra, sex toys and red wine), their sexual agreement is at historic lows. When Tiziana enrolls in the gym and meets a young and leafy personal trainer, for Luigi it is the beginning of an existential and hormonal crisis.
In the end Riccardo (Francesco Montanari), carved restaurateur and serial fedifrago, betrays his girlfriend Ilenia (Sarah Felberbaum), brilliant lawyer, with the partner’s wife. But when Ilenia invites him to dinner to “tell him an important thing”, he – terrified – thinks of a pregnancy test. In reality he just wants to propose an open relationship. Too bad that Riccardo, surprisingly, is discovered Too jealous to enjoy it. And when he discovers that his parents have a three -way relationship with an accountant and participate in swingers parties, his world view is definitively shattered.
Group therapy against toxic masculinity
Lost, confused, disoriented, the four protagonists decide – on the advice of a gay friend – to enroll in a deconstruction course of masculinity. The teacher? A character at the limits of the surreal, played with irony by Corrado Fortunawhich will guide them along a path of (car) tragicomic analysis between stereotypes, fragility and new awareness.
Cast and guest star
The protagonist quartet works very well: they are imperfect men, nice even when they are wrong, weak and human – of the Adorable Sneaks. Instead the main women of the series – although equipped with a career, an identity and a voice – risk at times to become hysterical spots. The exception is the exception housekeepera funny and much wiser character than anyone else, who knows how to read perfectly and virtue of his “landlord”.
Among the women it also stands out Thonywho gives life to Tiziana with irony, intelligence and a rare delicacy in telling the discomfort of those who do not give up at the passage. A convincing Sarah Felberbaum echoes her as Ilenia who wants love, freedom and clarity, even when her partner is too confused to understand what it means.
Surprisingly, two also peek exceptional guest star: Ilary Blasiin the role of pop diva, e Selvaggia Lucarelliwhich appears in an ironic version and perfectly in line with its public character. Two cameos that winks at the contemporary and gossip.
Why look atand “real males”
“Real males” is one comedy Which amuses without ever expiring in the trivial, plays with stereotypes without sermons and offers a deforming but realistic mirror of Italian masculinity in full mutation. It is smart, light but never superficial. And yes, those who have patriarchate well planted in DNA can also make people laugh.
A small cult in the making? Yes, and it will talk about it for a long time.
