The far-left candidate, Oliver Larkin, is running in the Sunshine State’s Democratic parliamentary primaries. However, his path is not easy in a state that, in recent years, has become increasingly conservative

American socialists find themselves faced with a challenge of no small importance: the Democratic parliamentary primaries in the state of Florida, which will be held on August 18th. In particular, attention will be paid to the challenge for the twenty-fifth district between the centrist Democratic congressman, Jared Moskowitz, and the challenger Oliver Larkin, who is supported by Democratic Socialists of America. According to the tracking of the New York Timesthe socialist is behind in all recent polls. However, the surveys do not agree on its disadvantage: for some, it would reach 30 points; for others, it would stop at just 2%.
After all, in recent years, Florida has moved further and further to the right. Which made life difficult for the left wing of the Democratic Party on the ground. Bernie Sanders failed to win the state in both the Democratic presidential primaries in which he participated: those of 2016 and those of 2020. Furthermore, since 1999 the so-called Sunshine State he doesn’t have a dem governor. And the senators he currently represents are both Republicans. Among other things, Donald Trump managed to conquer the state in the presidential elections of 2016, 2020 and 2024.
It is also worth remembering that this state is full of anti-Castro and anti-Chavista voters: which obviously does not help the ambitions of Asinello’s left wing. Suffice it to say that, last August 13th, i Democratic Socialists of America they published a statement de facto in favor of the Castro regime. “Today marks the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro ei Democratic Socialists of America recognize the historical importance of both this day and his figure,” the document read, before adding: “Fidel was an organizer, a fighter and remains an unshakable symbol of the anti-imperialist struggle and self-determination for the South of the world. THE Democratic Socialists of America boast a long history of solidarity with the Cuban people, their revolution and their self-determination.”
Finally, beyond the Cuban question, Larkin became the protagonist of particularly radical programmatic choices and ideas. He wants to abolish ICE and the US Senate. He also said he agreed with Zohran Mamdani on the issue of Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrest. Not only that. Larkin also accepted and publicized the endorsement he received from influencer Hasan Piker: someone who, in the past, defended Hezbollah and said that the United States “deserved” the terrorist attacks of September 11th.
In short, with these positions, Larkin may have put his electoral race in Florida at risk. For this reason, his possible victory could be particularly significant from the point of view of the political balance within the Asinello. It will therefore be interesting to analyze his performance next Tuesday. After all, i Democratic Socialists of America they are playing a lot, especially after the candidate they supported for the Wisconsin gubernatorial seat, Francesca Hong, was defeated last week in the local Dem primaries. And this, despite the fact that the polls on the eve of the day had clearly shown her as the favourite.
