For Stellantis a 2024 to forget: production down 36.8%

2024 will be remembered as annus horribilis For Stellantis. This is demonstrated by a press release issued by Fim-Cisl (Italian Metalworkers’ Federation), which takes up the statement of the Secretary General Ferdinando Uliano. The data provided, relating to production in the Italian factories of the automotive giant, paint a picture of a strong crisis.

After two years of growth, 2024 recorded the production of 475,090 units of cars and commercial vans, with a reduction of 36.8% compared to the 751,384 of the previous year. Furthermore, for the first time, all the factories recorded a negative figure, driven by the strong contraction (-45.7%) of motor vehicles, which saw the Stellantis factories produce only 283,090 units. To find such a low number you need to turn the clock back to 1956. The decline in commercial vehicles was less serious, with -16.6% which is equivalent to 192,000 units less than the previous year.

The Europe manager of Stellantis, Jean Philipe Learnedhad already partially announced the negative results for 2024 last December 17, when during a meeting between the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy and Stellantis the “Italy plan” for the relaunch of production in the country had been launched. On that occasion Learned had announced that the situation in terms of volumes would not undergo significant changes during 2025, since the new production launches planned for the current year in the Melfi, Cassino and Mirafiori plants would bear fruit starting from 2026, with the declared goal of returning to 750,000 units produced in 2023.

To give a complete picture of the strong crisis involved Stellantis these are the data from the Italian factories. The Turin production hub saw its production go from 85,940 to just 25,920 units, a drop of 70%, which rises to 74% if only the Maseratis produced there are taken into consideration. The collapse of the trident is also demonstrated by the 74% decline recorded in the other production plant in Modena, where only 260 Maserati cars were released. The data from the Cassino (Alfa Romeo Giulia, Tonale and Maserati Grecale) and Pomigliano (Fiat Panda, Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet) plants were also negative, with contractions of 45% and 21.9% respectively.

To complete the gloomy picture there are the negative data from the Melfi and Atessa factorieswhereas in the first the production of Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass fell by 63.5%, in the second the production of commercial vehicles contracted “only” by 16.6%.

In short, a 2024 to forgetwhich in addition to the unenviable negative production record saw the stock market title of Stellantis drop from a value of 20 euros per share on January 3, 2023 to 12 this year.

The problem does not only concern our country, but the entire continent. The lethal combination of European green regulations and a general increase in energy costs have brought the entire continental automotive sector to its kneesa fact demonstrated by the growing difficulties that are also affecting giants such as Volkswagen and Audi.
