Here is the America’s Cup in the Gulf of Naples: the top of world sailing at our home

From 24 to 27 September the preliminary regattas of the oldest event in the world will take place with Team New Zealand defending itself from the attack of five boats including the Italian Luna Rossa. Ferrarelle sponsor of the event and of the winning team, Marzio Perrelli new CEO of ACP who organizes the event

From 1851 to the present, it is the history of the America’s Cupthe oldest international competition to land in our seas. It all began when a schooner called America crossed the ocean to challenge an English boat on the Isle of White. America won and took the cup home, that day the America’s Cup was born. Discovered Italy with Azzurrathe boat of Cino Ricci commissioned by the Aga Khan and Gianni Agnelli which in 1983 kept us in front of the TV for entire nights, then it arrived The Moor of Venice by Raul Gardini that with Paul Cayard won the Luis Vuitton Cup, reserved for challengers, until Luna Rossa by Patrizio Bertelli (owner of Prada) who initially entrusted the boat to Francesco De Angelis . Luna Rossa has participated in six editions of the America’s Cup and will represent Italy in this one too. The America’s Cup is becoming more and more Italian, not just because the second preliminary regatta will take place in the Gulf of Naples and because there is an Italian boat, Luna Rossa, but also and above all because the organization is now in the hands of Marzio Perrelli, manager who entered sport from finance in 2018, when he was appointed Executive Vice President of Sky Italia, as head of Sky Sport. And now it’s the CEO of America’s Cup Partnership the consortium that coordinates and manages the organisational, competitive and commercial aspects of the America’s Cup. This path also includes the choice of Ferrarelle to bond with the world of sailing, becoming sponsor of both the 38th America’s Cup that of the team Emirates Team New Zealand. A partnership that brings together innovation, technology, attention to the environment and teamwork, but which also takes on a particular meaning for the connection with the territory: the competition will in fact arrive in Naples, a few kilometers from the places where Ferrarelle was bornoffering the brand the opportunity to showcase Italian excellence on an international stage without losing the connection with its origins. Appointment in Naples from 24 to 27 September.

The boats

For those who missed the latest editions of the America’s Cup, forget about the boats of the 80s, technology is making giant strides and today’s boats seem to fly on the water: they are the Ac75, incredible boats and seeing them glide on the water is truly spectacular. They are increasingly faster boats and the teams will be given the opportunity to make small changes but always within certain regulatory times. The news is that the crew has been reduced from 8 to 5 with a woman in the crew and then there will be a guest on board who could be the owner or a famous person chosen by the team. The Cagliari regattas were a great success with the public and in Naples there is already great enthusiasm for the event now around the corner. Television coverage ensured by Rai and Sky.

Who participates

There are six teams that will participate in the Naples regattas: the holders of the trophy Emirates Team New Zealand (New Zealand) and then the challengers Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (Italy), GB1 / GB One Challenge (Great Britain) – Il Challenger of Record, Alinghi Red Bull Racing (Swiss), K-Challenge (France), American Racing Challenger (United States) – The US team recently added to the competition.

For the Vespucci it is already time to prepare for the ceremony which sees the ship in the official role of Italian ambassador during the days of the America’s Cup. The ship will remain in the Gulf of Naples to be framed by cameras from all over the world until September 25, with a tight calendar of events that place it among the protagonists of the pre-regatta, a preview of the great America’s Cup event in July 2027.
