High voltage after the Kashmir attack

After the attack in Kashmir and a Pakistani ballistic test, the tension rises. Usa and China intervene to avoid a nuclear escalation

The fibrillations between Islamabad and New Delhi are increasing. Saturday, Pakistan carried out a ballistic testlaunching a terra-drag missile with a range of 450 kilometers. According to the Islamabad government, the launch was aimed at guaranteeing the operational readiness of the troops and validating the key technical parameters. The test took place a few days after Pakistan had made it known to be in possession of some credible intelligence information, according to which India would be ready to launch a military attack.

The tension between Nuova Delhi and Islamabad went up following the terrorist attack, which occurred in Kashmir on April 22nd: attack in which they were killed 25 Indian citizens and a Nepalese. India has accused Pakistan that it is involved in the massacrean accusation that Islamabad has however rejected. Since then, the two countries have adopted various measures of mutual hostility. Pakistan closed the airspace to Indian airlines. New Delhi, for its part, suspended the treaty on the waters of the adoan agreement from 1960 which, according to Reuters, guarantees water to 80% of Pakistani farms. In recent days, the Indian Navy has also carried out exercises. All this, while Last Sunday, for the tenth consecutive night, there were shots in the Kashmir between Indian and Pakistani forces. Finally, it should not be overlooked that both countries are in possession of nuclear weapons.

In short, the overall picture is worrying. And this pushed Both Washington and Beijing to try to intervene from a diplomatic point of view. “Our hope is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that does not lead to a wider regional conflict,” the American vice -president, JD Vance, said Thursday. “And we hope, frankly, that Pakistan, to the extent that he is responsible for it, cooperi with India to ensure that the terrorists who sometimes operate in his territory are hunted and faced,” he added. “As a neighboring municipality of both nations, China urges the two sides to exercise moderation, resolve divergences through dialogue and consultation and jointly maintaining peace and regional stability”, last Tuesday the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Guo Jiakun said.

However, it should be recorded that Beijing is more moved to the side of Islamabad. On April 26, at the crisis already started, The Foreign Minister of Islamabad, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, had a phone call with the Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. “Both parties”, recited a note following the conversation, “reiterated their firm determination to support regional peace and stability, to promote mutual respect and understanding and jointly contrasting unilateralism and hegemonic policies”. Words with which, not too implicitly, Pakistan and China had launched a stocked to New Delhi. It cannot therefore be excluded that the underway crisis can indirectly go to feed the tensions between Beijing and India.
