The investigation of Altroconsumo: where and how much families, couples and singles can save
Between 3 and 31 March 2025, Altroconsumo monitored 1,150 supermarkets, hypermarkets and discount stores in 67 cities, detecting 1.6 million prices on 125 categories of products, from food to personal care, to pet food. The average expenditure estimated by Istat is 9,276 euros per year for a family of four people, 8,208 euros for a couple and 5,638 euros for a single. According to the investigation, orienting himself towards the right signs means spending less. The maximum savings can be reached by the families of four people, who can break down the shopping account of up to 3,700 euros per year. For couples, savings on twelve months can reach 3,273 euros, while for single for 2,249 euros.
Where you spend less: Eurospin at the top, Carrefour Queen of the Private Label
The most convenient chain ever is Eurospin, which according to Altroconsumo allows to reduce expenditure of up to 40% compared to the national average for a family that is oriented on the choice of the cheapest products on the shelves. Instead, opting for a trolley made only of the tailor -branded products is Carrefour, followed by Conad, to guarantee the greater cut, with a reduction of up to € 3.308 per year. For families who prefer a more flexible approach, combining branded products, private labels and cheap items, the so -called mixed shopping basket, convenience depends on the chosen channel. In discount stores, for example, making a mixed shopping from in the market can translate into an annual saving of 2,838 euros. In rival discount stores, Eurospin and Lidl, the advantage remains high (2,600 and 2,400 euros respectively). In traditional supermarkets, however, the margin falls drastically: at best, with Famila, there is only 208 euros. Those who prefer branded products must be satisfied with a maximum saving of 506 euros per year, with Famila and Famila Superstore at the top of the ranking. Immediately behind are Esselunga, Ipercoop and Conad space.
Shopping: north more competitive, penalized south
Convenience is not the same everywhere. In the north the competition between insignia is stronger: in Venice a family can contain the annual expenditure for 6,260 euros, in Como and Verona just above 6,300 euros. In Rome and Bologna, savings Massimo exceeds 1,300 euros per year, while in Como it touches 1,386 euros. In the South, however, the scissor narrows: in Naples and Caserta the maximum savings do not reach 50 euros. The least convenient city is absolute is Sassari, where the minimum expenditure does not drop below 7,410 euros per year. In Central Italy Florence stands out, with saving margins of up to 970 euros, while cities such as Perugia, Pisa and Pescara offer differences between 400 and 700 euros. The regional differences weighs also: in Puglia the expenditure absorbs 19.3% of family income, against 10.7% of Trentino-Alto Adige, where average incomes exceed 60,000 euros per year.
