“I don’t have a life, it’s like being under house arrest”

Interviewed by Vespa, Sempio vents about the Garlasco case: he talks about his upended life and answers the key points of the investigation

«In front of my house there is the journalists’ station. I can’t go around the street, I can’t take a tour of Pavia, go to the supermarket. There are people who want a photo, who film me or who call me by name.” Andrea Sempio, guest of Bruno Vespa at «Five minutes»confessed the terrible moment he is going through. The current suspect for the murder of Chiara Poggi he gave free rein to his feelings, and provided explanations onthe main elements that see him involved in the investigation: the receipt, the calls to Poggi’s house, the DNA under the victim’s nails and the famous fingerprint 33.

Sempio’s outburst

In the initial part of the interview, Andrea Sempio revealed that he now has a hellish life: «There is a certain persistence, I hope in good faith. I don’t have a life at the moment, I went back to living in the bedroom I once lived in and at almost 40 years old I’m stuck thereI can’t do anything, It’s like being under house arrest».

He then spoke about the historical friends involved in the affair, with whom relations are temporarily blocked to avoid possible insinuations against them. He said that it wasn’t easy for him to meet and date someone after Chiara’s case, and how every time the story resurfaces he is forced to relive what he has already experienced, as if in an endless nightmare.

Example He now struggles to speak and move normally because he is afraid of being seen or heard: «If I say to my parents in the car “I’ll tell you about it later”, I think “they don’t think it’s something shady”? There is paranoia.” Here he has to weigh every word, fearing that it could be misinterpreted.

On the key points of the investigation against him

On relations with Chiara Poggi, Sempio said that there was essentially no connection: «At the time, there was a 7-8 year difference between me and Chiarashe had a degree, she worked… they were two different worlds – she explains – we didn’t have a life that could bring us into contact.” Vespa asks him if he saw the pornographic videos on the victim’s computer, but the answer is negative: «It was material that was on the computer, it’s true that I played on the computer, but I never had access to this. I was always in the company of Marco (Chiara’s brother and Andrea’s friend).”

The interview comes to a head when the famous one comes into play footprint 33the one found on the right wall of the staircase that led to the tavern of the Poggi house and attributed to Example: «We had it checked several times. I have doubts that it can be attributed to me – he begins to say – even if it were, since it wasn’t a bloody trace, it wouldn’t be strange. Can be”. He was also skeptical about his presence in the cellar: «We must have been there a maximum of 3-4 times, but that could be my mark… it could be».

As for the DNA on Chiara’s nailthe suspect states that he is still awaiting the outcome of the evidentiary hearing. «We keep talking about DNA, but they don’t have real DNA. Even taking the famous consultations against Sempio they never manage to say with certainty that it is Sempio’s DNA”. Andrea therefore asked himself: “If it had been a trace left during an attack, wouldn’t there be a clear trace?”.

The receipt and the phone calls to Poggi’s house

Sempio then tells the story of the receipt from Vigevano: «That morning I was in Vigevano, this receipt attests to it, this event happened… obviously we kept it”. He adds that he kept it not because he thought he would be investigated, but at least “consulted”.

Vespa has also explored the three phone calls made by the suspect to the Poggi home, which took place between 7 and 8 August, shortly before the murder. «I knew that Marco had gone on holiday, I didn’t know when he would return. I tried to contact him, but I couldn’t.” He would then call a first time by mistake, a second time to ask if Marco was at home and finally a third time to ask the exact day of his return.

The relationship with Lovati and the note found in the house

The last part of the interview focuses on the relationship with Massimo Lovatiwhich ended abruptly due to a “divergence on the defensive line”: «Lawyer Lovati had an aggressive idea and difficulty relating to consultants. He said “I can do it on my own”. While we had a broad-spectrum vision.”

Finally, Vespa asks the suspect about the ticket with the writing “20/30 euros”, which referred to the collection of the archiving file of his case. The father, however, had another more detailed sheet with the amounts paid for his defense: at least 50 thousand euros. «I had three lawyers, but Lovati had the final say – states Sempio – “Lovati” was the generic name for lawyers’ fees.”
