The line of deterrence, chosen by Donald Trump on illegal immigration, begins to bear fruit. According to Fox News, 582 illegal crossings of the border were recorded last Sunday. This is a drastically lower number than those of the last days of the Biden administration, when they counted between 1,200 and 1,400 irregular entrances. Also on Sunday, according to NBC News, 1,179 illegal immigrants were also arrested: 52% of these consisted of irregular immigrants with criminal records. Recall that the head of the border, Tom Homan, has adopted the line of the so -called “collateral arrests”. That is, the priority is given to the illegal immigrants who are stained with crimes. However, if other without precedents are discovered during the raids, the latter are still arrested.
In all this, Trump is evaluating the hypothesis of deploying 10,000 additional soldiers at the southern border. The president also has just signed the Laken Riley Act: a law that, approved by a large majority by the congress, provides that the illegal immigrants guilty of serious crimes are put under arrest. The rule takes, not surprisingly, the name from Laken Riley: the killed girl, in February 2024 in Georgia, by an irregular Venezuelan immigrant. Not only that. The tenant of the White House has also announced its intention to send the illegal immigrants considered more dangerous to Guantanamo: he then commissioned the Pentagon and the Department for internal security to expand a center for migrants already existing in the bay. A center that must be underlined, is separated from the well -known prison for terrorists who currently hosts about fifteen prisoners. A center that, we add, has been used in the past by various American administrations, especially to host Haitian and Cuban immigrants.
In the meantime, Homan has promised the hard line against the so -called “sanctuary city”: we refer to those municipal administrations that historically refuse to collaborate with the federal authorities in the fight against irregular immigration. On the other hand, the Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, explicitly commissioned the local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with the Trump team in the implementation of mass expulsions. “In the last four years, Texas has worked 24 hours a day to defend our southern border, while former president Joe Biden refused to protect our country from an invasion that had allowed,” said Abbott, for Then add: “Now we have a commander to the end of the White House who will make the necessary to protect the Americans”.
Finally, but not least, the Trump administration is dealing with El Salvador, to send the expelled there that should be refused by their countries of origin. All this, while the repatriations have already begun. It is enough to look at the recent crisis with Colombia who suddenly refused to re -establish some irregular migrants expelled from the United States. Trump unlocked the situation, threatening to hit Bogota with heavy duties. Dice that are about to be applied also against Mexico and Canada: some time ago, the American president had, not surprisingly, accused these two countries of not doing enough to stop the migratory flows directed to the US frontiers.
