“It is our declaration of economic independence”

The American president announced mutual duties. It starts from a common base of 10%. There are tariff increases for the countries with which the US discounts the most significant commercial deficits. The European Union at 20%. The cars are 25%.

“It is our declaration of economic independence”. With these words, Donald Trump has announced the “mutual rates” during what has returned to define “the day of liberation” for America: that America which, according to the tenant of the White House, has so far been “sacked, raped and plundered”. As pointed out by the CNN, the President has decreed duties equal to at least 10% on almost all imported goods in the United States: however, tariff increases on the countries with which Washington discounts the worst commercial deficits are foreseen. Here are some of the duties that have been known: 34% in China, 20% at the European Union, 46% at Vietnam, 24% to Japan, 25% to South Korea, 26% in India and 10% in the United Kingdom.

«For years, American citizens who work hard were forced to stay on the sidelines while other nations became rich and powerful, largely at our expense. But now it is our turn to thrive, “said Trump, claiming that the new duties will serve to” reduce our taxes and to weld our national debt “. “These horrendous imbalances have devastated our industrial basis and put our national security at risk,” he also said, and then add: “I blame the former presidents and leaders of the past who were not doing their work. They let it happened, and they let it happen at a level that nobody can even believe. That’s why, starting from midnight, it will impose a 25% rate on all cars produced abroad “.

“Today we take sides on the side of the American worker and finally we put America in first place”he also specified. He then turned to the countries affected by the duties, saying: «If they complain, if you want your rate to be zero, then build your product right here in America because there are no rates if you make your system, your product in America. And we saw companies come as we never seen before. “

During the announcement to the White House, the structural reasons that led the American president to this tariff policy emerged. As we have seen, he obviously referred to the issue of commercial imbalances, but also mentioned the debt node and, above all, the need to finance the cut of taxes. Not only that. Trump also mentioned the issue of national security. In fact, let’s not forget that the main objective of the current tenant of the White House is to relaunch the US manufacturing sector, especially in certain areas, such as the Rust Belt.

Well, in the eyes of the president, the manufacturing sector has a double value: the socio -economic one (which is expressed in the defense of American blue collars) And, in fact, that of national security (which explains the duties to the steel that imposed a few weeks ago). This, like it or not, is the logic that moves Trump on the duties. Its tariff policies are a means of redesigning the entire economic and security system that the United States have so far been the pivot.
