National Historic Clothing Day is born on November 11th: an initiative to enhance Italian traditions, craftsmanship and Made in Italy. Presented by ministers Santanchè and Valditara, the day celebrates culture, tourism and the roots of our country
Our traditions, culture, craftsmanship are the protagonists of the “national historical clothing day”. The initiative, which will be celebrated for the first time on November 11, was presented in a conference in Rome at the Museum of Civilizations, by the Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanchè, and the Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara.
The importance of roots and the impact on tourism
The national day, which was institutionalized this year with the law of 15 April 2025 n. 59, in addition to representing «a living and dynamic identity code», said Santanchè, «will offer tourists from all over the world a special opportunity to learn about and appreciate the culture of historical clothing, as a distinctive element of Made in Italy and a strategic vector of tourist attraction». In fact, historical clothes not only bring to mind our roots, but also constitute a magnet for tourists towards our villages. The event “will give the opportunity” to go “to the internal areas, to the smaller islands, which are cradles, custodians, laboratories of our wonderful artisan, manufacturing, artistic and identity heritage” explained the minister. This also ensures visitors the “experiential tourism” they are looking for. Among other things, the date of November 11th is emblematic: as Santanchè pointed out, it is proof that the path of “deseasonalization” has been undertaken, allowing “visitors to have experiences” even in this period. The minister then highlighted that from 2026 550,000 euros per year will be allocated to support local initiatives. The Ministry of Tourism is responsible for implementing “the provisions in concrete reality, through specific structures”.
During the conference, Senator Anna Maria Fallucchi, the first signatory of the law on demonstrations in historical dress, announced that the economy among the artisans of small towns had been “set in motion”.
Training
Training is also central in this area, the importance of which was underlined by Minister Valditara. «In Italy, we have 60 high schools with 80,000 kids who deal with fashion, and many of these are dedicated to the restoration and replication of historical clothing» he declared. «A day like this serves to reconstruct and learn about our past, bringing it to the attention of people, of those who come to visit Italy». And since it is “important to know our past”, the minister specified that “in the new national indications” he wanted to “give emphasis to the study of the history of the community in which one was born, in which one lives, in which one studies”.
Events
On the occasion of the initiative, in the Museum of Civilization it is possible to visit, up to and including 11 November, an exhibition on historical clothing belonging to each Italian region. But the initiatives will extend throughout the country, with local communities being at the center of this day. Also on November 11th, the Rai channels will broadcast an institutional commercial which was previewed last Thursday.
