Italy is in the Cobolli final, an epic, three-hour battle

Berrettini easily overcomes Collignon, the second point comes after an endless match that Flavio wins 17-15 in the tie-break of the third set against the Belgian Bergs. Now we wait for the winner of Germany-Spain

Sometimes tennis offers indescribable emotions even if Alcaraz and Sinner are not on the court. The three hour and five minute battle between Flavio Cobolli and the Belgian Bergs have thrilled the public in Bologna and kept millions of Italians in front of the TV, we are sure that when the auditel data are released they will be important numbers. Flavio Cobolli remained attached to the match even when it seemed that his physical energy was running out. He put a lot of heart into it and ultimately that head which in tennis is decisive in decisive moments. The one that was probably missing from Bergs who always maintained very high service percentages while those of the Roman were much lower. Yet Cobolli didn’t give up an inch and that 17-15 third set tie-break will remain a beautiful memory of a career that is blossoming. In the end Cobolli tore that blue shirt that he cares so much about in front of the crowd that went crazy with joy. A gesture similar to the one made several times by Nole Djokovic from whom Cobolli has always been inspired. Flavio canceled out seven match balls to his opponent and in the end he won with the last drop of energy he had left. Italy goes to the Davis Cup final for the third time, on Sunday we will face the winner of the match between Germany and Spain who face each other on Saturday.

Flavio’s happiness

In the end the adrenaline flowed through Flavio Cobolli’s veins: “I don’t know what to say. We are a group of five guys who really give everything they have every time when they take the field. We fight for each other, we are trying to reach our dream, which you all know what it is. I want to thank you because you gave me a great hand, great warmth, and playing like this is really much easier. Today I took a bit of a risk, but this is how I imagined my ideal match. I’ve always tried to go to the third, today I swear I didn’t do it on purpose (laughs). I lived my biggest dream, thanks to everyone. I want to dedicate the victory to my mother, who doesn’t usually come to these appointments, to my brother who keeps crying… and stop it. And to a great friend of mine (Bove, ed.) who I hope will return to playing football soon. Forza Italia!”.

Berrettini’s safety

Italy’s 2-0 win over Belgium began with Matteo Berrettini’s victory in two sets over Collignon. Matteo seemed to clearly improve in condition compared to the first match against Rodionov and Collignon was certainly a more difficult opponent to overcome. The blue imposed his superiority by rediscovering his best shots: the serve and the forehand. The ending (6-3, 6-4) says it all.
