In the midst of the controversy over the alleged agreement between the Italian government and Elon Musk regarding the Starlink satellite network – an agreement currently denied – the Tesla magnate points the finger at the other historic gray eminence at the center of all conspiracy theories for years, namely the timeless George Soros. Musk writes on X: “Soros has spent millions to create the false nightmare of asylum seekers, which is destroying Europe and America.” Musk’s message is clear: those who are outraged based on rumors of foreign interference have always chosen silence in the face of the Hungarian billionaire’s incursions. And therefore it cannot give lessons in transparency.
It is the contradiction of a left which, despite presenting itself as the terminal of supranational technocracies, today discovers itself as sovereignist only by hearing the rumors of American interference. And he is scandalized by the amount of wealth on which Musk sits: wealth through which he would be ready to manipulate world public opinion, especially Italian public opinion, given the good relations between Rome and the new administration in Washington.
But history shows that there are billionaires and billionaires: it depends on the political color. It is no coincidence that the center-left has perpetually defended Soros from the periodic attacks of the right, the right that still today accuses him of promoting migratory waves with money. In the case of Soros, in short, money is not needed at all: and foreign funding is not that bad after all, if it serves to subsidize the Arab Spring and the democratic uprisings, speculate against the lira in the early nineties, and fund associations and parties through a third party. from half the world, all rigorously progressive and democratic. In that case, no controversy: if someone protests, they are sent with a one-way ticket into the cauldron of unpresentable conspiracy theorists. For goodness sake, it is true that a mystical aura has always hovered over the Soros galaxy, which would like the tycoon to be at the top of the pyramid of the illuminati who secretly guide the destinies of the world. Flying lower, in a prosaic manner, it is true that the Soros foundation turns over millions, and all for causes similar to the social democratic flag. But what is granted to Soros, the reactionary Musk is evidently denied, in theory even before in practice, since the rich man from the States is the closest associate of the diabolical Donald Trump.
It is easy to understand how, in this long series of hypocrisies, the national interest that is being talked about in these hours is the last thought. Be wary of those who tear their clothes in the face of unacceptable “foreign interference”. Indeed, let he who is without interference cast the first stone.
