After a long restoration, the Great War Museum reopens to the public with a renewed and immersive exhibition itinerary.
He reopened to the public on Thursday 17 July, after important redevelopment and rearrangement works, the Museum of the Great War of Gorizia, in the presence of the city and regional authorities. The intervention is part of the program Go! 2025 For Nova Gorica – Gorizia European capital of culture, with the ambition to relaunch the museum as a place of memory and European dialogue.
Hosted in the historic headquarters of the provincial museums of Borgo Castello, the museum is now managed by Erpac FVG and is presented with a new set -up signed by Alessandra Martina and Lucio Fabi.
Ten rooms to tell the daily life of the war
The exhibition itinerary is divided into ten thematic rooms that tell the daily life of soldiers and civilians, between trenches, bombing cities and silent sacrifices. Uniforms, weapons, personal objects, documents and photographs accompany the visitor on an immersive journey through the horrors and hopes of the war.
The new set -up resumes and develops the original vision of the museum inaugurated in 1990 under the direction of Maria Masau Dan, which had marked a paradigm change in the museum story of the conflict. Among the historical curators, Antonio Sema and Lucio Fabi had already put the human dimension of the war at the center, laying the foundations for a more empathic and less celebratory story.
A new multimedia museum
The museum now opens up to an even wider audience thanks to the use of new technologies: introductory videos, interactive stations and a diorama of the battlefield updated with multimedia elements designed by Ikon, specialist in immersive digital experiences. The descriptive texts, in Italian, Slovenian and English, are designed to be inclusive and clear, in line with the guidelines of the Mic.
The last room is dedicated to the memory of the Great War, with a focus on the monuments and sacraments built after the war. A reflection that ideally connects with the 2024 exhibition on museum fittings over time and that will continue with conferences and cultural initiatives by Erpac.
A more accessible museum, for everyone
Great attention has been paid to accessibility: new ramps, platforms, elevators and power steering today allow a complete use also to visitors with motor or visual disabilities. New lighting systems, video surveillance, fire and firefighting have also been installed, and a data network functional to the home automation control of the spaces.
Excavations and finds: the museum continues to tell
During the work for the installation of an external lift and the creation of a ramp, archaeological finds of interest were found, now the study of the Superintendency Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia. A discovery that adds a further level to the historical narrative of the Gorizia village.
