shorter and further trips

The Segugio.it Insurance Observatory photographs the new trends of Italian travellers: tourism towards exotic destinations is growing, long stays are decreasing, families are booming and the demand for travel insurance is increasing

The Christmas and New Year holidays change skin: shorter, more exotic and more familiar. The picture emerges from an analysis by the Segugio.it Insurance Observatory which outlines an identikit of the Italian traveler for the end-of-year holidays. It changes compared to the summer. Trips are shorter, families travel more and singles less and the world (excluding the USA, Canada and the Caribbean) accounts for more than half of the destinations chosen. And in parallel the travel insurance policy seems to become a must.

Shorter trips, growing families and distant destinations: the identikit of winter 2025

The first evidence concerns the average length of holidayswhich drops to 10.6 days against i 13.2 of summer. It is especially noticeable when looking in detail: trips of up to a week go from 11.1% in the summer to 19.7% in the Christmas period, while those beyond three weeks collapse from 52.7% in the summer to 35.8%. In short, the short trip becomes the new normality of the holidays.
The composition of the departing groups also changes. Singles, protagonists of the summer with almost 30% of the policies requested, drop to 18.6%. In their place emerge the families, which grow from 18.6% to 24.4%and groups, which reach almost 30%. Couples also grew slightly, going from 25.1% to 27.2%.
The goals change radically. Europe, which intercepted almost a quarter of searches in the summer, plummeted to 14.9%. Italy goes up slightly to 17.1%, but the rest of the world dominates: the area “World excluding USA/Canada/Caribbean” goes from 42.2% in the summer to 51.5%, more than half of the preferences. A clear signal: the desire for heat is driving many towards the Middle East, North Africa and South-East Asia. Destinations that include the United States, Canada and the Caribbean instead drop to 16.5%, probably penalized by higher costs and more complex deadlines for documents.

Travel policies: how much they cost, which covers to choose and why they are convenient

And in this photograph the demand for travel insurance rises. The most selected coverage is the medical policy, chosen by 56.1% of those leaving. A choice that goes hand in hand with non-EU destinations: a single access to the local healthcare system is enough to pay, in some countries, amounts comparable to the cost of the entire holiday. The medical and baggage policy follows, at 26.6%, while the complete formula (with added cancellation, early return, civil liability and other services) stops at 17.3%. The surprising part comes when you look at the average daily costs. For a family of four heading to a non-EU destination such as Egypt for a week, prices range between 10.41 euros per day for the basic medical policy; 12.02 per day for medical + baggage and 18.98 euros per day for full coverage. For an adult couple traveling to the United States, the figures are even more modest: 8.01 euros per day for medical coverage; 9.15 euros per day for doctor + baggage and 13.99 euros per day for total protection. The differences between the policies are therefore just a few euros, but the comprehensive one remains the least chosen, still.
