Sinner beats Alcaraz in Monte Carlo. Jannik returns number one in the world

Victory in two sets and first success in the Principality tournament: “Happy to have triumphed in a tournament on clay”

Four tournaments won consecutively, an incredible month and a half achieved by Jannik Sinner. And the latest triumph comes on the red clay of Monte Carlo against the most prestigious opponent and Jannik Sinner with the victory in two sets against Carlos Alcaraz come back number one in the world of tennis to the detriment of the Spanish champion. After Fabio Fognini who won in the Principality in 2019, here is the victory that the South Tyrolean tennis player was missing, a header victory in a match complicated by the wind that constantly changed direction. A very balanced match that led Sinner and Alcaraz to play the first set in a tie-break where in the final he played a bad joke on both of them: Sinner wasted the first set ball with a fairly easy forehand sent into the net, a moment later Carlos gave him the set with a double fault. The second set went by in balance until the fifth set when Alcaraz broke Sinner’s serve to take the lead at 3-2: from here a battle of nerves began with very tight games that Sinner managed impeccably playing four consecutive games and breaking his opponent’s serve twice, always maintaining his own even in times of difficulty. Two hours and fifteen minutes of great tennis and the demonstration that Sinner continues to work to improve, a year ago on clay he seemed in difficulty and now he has gone on to win a prestigious tournament like the one in Monte Carlo against the strongest opponent. Sinner went to be the boss at Alacaraz’s house, proving that he is the number one in the world at the moment.

Mutual compliments

The elegance of Alcaraz emerged in the first words after the race that he addressed to Sinner: “I have to, I have to, I have to congratulate Jannik. You’re doing something incredible, you’re achieving crazy goals.” And Sinner expressed his happiness like this: “It’s truly a dream to play here, for me it’s like playing in Italy, thanks to everyone.” And about the tournament he said: “We arrived in Monte Carlo trying to accumulate as many games as possible to find the right feeling, with the big tournaments approaching. Today we both expressed a very high levelgiven the wind conditions that continued to change direction. In the second set, behind a break, I tried to stay there mentally. It’s another incredible achievement. Returning to number 1 is important for me, but the ranking is secondary. I’m happy to have finally won an important tournament on clay.”
