Victory in two sets with some missed passes but in absolute control. Yet another match with the German who beat Medvedev in three sets
He won’t be in top condition, maybe he’ll even be a little tired. But Jannik Sinner continues to win and qualifies for the semifinals of the ATP1000 in Paris. One hour and nine minutes to overcome the American Shelton with some difficulty at the beginning of the game and then an empty pass in the second with an 8-0 run in favor of Shelton. But nothing that could call into question the victory of the South Tyrolean, who says he doesn’t think about the ranking and only thinks day by day, but in the meantime the finish line is close. On Monday evening Sinner can return to being number one in the world and he knows that it would be a great effect in view of the Turin Finals. To do so he must win the Paris tournament and the next obstacle in the semi-final will be the German Alexander Zverev who came from behind to beat the Russian Daniel Medvev in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 7-6) after two and a half hours of fighting. A waste of energy that could weigh heavily on the German’s performance in the match against Sinner which will be played at 5pm.
Service and response
Jannik said he was happy with his match, in particular with the serve and return which actually put Shelton in great difficulty. In the first set the start seemed a bit slow, Sinner also gave the impression of having some physical problems, he touched his knee and then his back. Small passages within a game dominated without problems in which Shelton struggled to keep up with Jannik’s pace, making a lot of mistakes. In the 400th match of his career on the major circuit, Sinner achieved the 23rd consecutive victory on indoor courts (Davis included) and became the first Italian to reach The semi-finals 43 times on the tour, separating Fognini and Panatta. Sinner has reached at least the semi-finals in 9 of the 11 tournaments played so far in 2025, with the seal of two Slam victories, two 500m titles and four finals.
The match
Sinner started off a little tense not taking advantage of two break points at 2-2 in the first set. He asked the bench for advice and Cahill told him to shorten the rallies, so Jannik immediately gets the break and Shelton’s errors help him (he will close with 67% of first serves, only 29% of points won with second serves, 7 aces and 5 double faults). Set closed 6-3 and when Sinner goes up 3-1 in the second the game seems over but instead Jannik has a blackout, the American scores a series of eight consecutive points and takes the score to 3-3. But it’s Shelton’s last call because then Sinner regains his rhythm and scores three consecutive games thus closing with another 6-3.
