Sinner in Rome, good first match “Now I have to raise the level”

Problem-free debut against Ofner in a Foro Italico all for him, on Monday he faces the winner of the match between Poporyn and Mensik

Jannik Sinner’s debut on For Italico’s Centrale in a jubilant crowd went as everyone expected. Easy victory for the world number one against the Austrian Ofner (6-3, 6-4) and with the twenty-ninth consecutive victory the South Tyrolean reaches the record of Nole Djokovic who has already left the Internazionali di Roma. Sinner will now return to the field on Monday to face the winner of the match between Alexei Poporyn (who eliminated Berrettini) and Jakub Mensik, the last player who handed Sinner a defeat. It happened in Doha and since then Sinner has only won.

Jannik’s happiness

“I’m happy to be here, in Italy, it’s a joy for an Italian. Every year when you come back you reflect on what you did one year after the other. I’m very happy and I’ll have to raise the level as much as possible for the next match.”

The match

Rancid wigs everywhere in the stands and the usual dominator on the pitch. Sinner didn’t give Ofner too much space with a break already at 3-1, which practically decided the first set, from that moment Sinner only had to manage by easily closing the first set. In the second set Jannik makes haste first: he breaks the opening serve from Ofner who risks a double break. The match continues with two interruptions due to illnesses among the public in the stands, fortunately without consequences. Sinner is not distracted and closes with serve and forehand. The Black Knight can smile with 82% points with the first and seven points out of nine at the net.
