The Spaniard has not played since April 14th in Barcelona, but after the very hard 4-hour training session with Rule he decided to participate in the US Open. Jannik announces no: “I’m very sad”
Carlos Alcaraz will be on the court for the last Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows, Jannik Sinner will not. 24 hours later the Spaniard announced his participation in the US Open on his social channels and about 24 hours later Sinner withdrew. The Spanish champion will return to play 138 days later. The last match he played was in Barcelona on April 14th, then he had to stop, missing first Paris and then Wimbledon, due to wrist problems. Now the inflammation of the sheath that lubricates the tendon is over and the latest training sessions, also documented on social media, have convinced Alcaraz and his staff to return to the American tournament. Alcaraz pushed hard in Thursday’s training with Holger Rune. Four hours of high intensity with Carlos firing shots of all kinds at maximum speed and power without feeling any pain.
Sinner says no
A few minutes ago it was the turn of Jannik Sinner dispel doubts about his presence in New York by announcing the forfeit. The world number skipped the Cincinnati tournament to rest his knee which has been bothering him recently, receiving treatment at J Medical in Turin. But it won’t be there either at the US Open. Sinner played his last match at Wimbledon, then after the holidays he gave up on Cincinnati and, having completed the cycle of shock wave therapy on his knee, he returned to Monte Carlo where he trained again today at the Country Club. The announcement on social media explains the situation well: “Even though I have worked hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. In the last few days we have returned to the court in Monte Carlo and we have realized that I still need time to recover from my right knee problem. Obviously I’m very sad and disappointed, because New York has a special place in my heart. I couldn’t wait to come back and play in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.” In any case, by not playing in New York, Jannik will remain number one in the world: Alcaraz, in fact, as reigning champion, must defend 2,000 points. Instead, Jannik will discard 1,300a finalist last year. Consequently, Alcaraz will at most be able to remain at 7,160 points if he manages to confirm himself as champion, while Sinner could lose ground compared to his current 12,800 points in case of absence in New York, slipping to 11,500.
