Victory in two sets in Miami after an hour and a half interruption due to bad weather and Jannik achieves the Sunshine Double. In Monte Carlo he can return to number one
Another step in the history of tennis. JAnnik Sinner also wins the Miami tournament and accomplish that Sunshine Double which only a few great champions have managed. After Courier, Chang, Sampras, Rios, Agassi, Federer (3 times) and Djokovic (4), here is Sinner who however adds another record because it is the first to win without losing a single set and extends his consecutive series on hard courts to 34. Beating the Czech Lehecka was not easy because the number 14 in the world tried in every way to counter Sinner, almost surgical in the decisive moments of the match with his serve. In the first set, after getting the break, he found himself 0-40 down and reversed the situation with five consecutive points (three first shots and two aces).
An hour and a half of suspension
The rain started to cause problems for the players, so much so that in the first game of the second set they rushed back to the locker room and remained there for an hour and a half until the storm stopped and the court dried out. At the restart the match is more competitive: Sinner has to cancel three break points at 4-3 for Lehecka, but then at 4-4 Sinner capitalizes on the sixth break point of the second set and on his serve closes the match with a double 6-4. “Bez Kimi Italia”, is the message that Jannik writes on the camera, dedicating the triumph to Bezzecchi and Antonelliwinners in MotoGP and Formula 1. “I follow Formula 1 and MotoGP, many Italians make me passionate. We are experiencing an incredible moment in many sports, we hope also for the Football World Cup.” Now Jannik is focusing on Monte Carlo and the return to clay. With a success against the Principality he could overtake Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP rankings and become number one in the world again. It is his declared goal for 2026.
Number one
By winning in Monte Carlo Sinner would return to number one, but there are other possibilities. Sinner will be next to his name in the ranking that will be published today 12400 pointsminus 1190 from Carlos Alcaraz, stopped at 13590. Jannik will therefore show up in Monte Carlo alone -190 points from the Spaniard, given that Carlitos will receive the 1000 points won in 2025. By winning, Sinner returns to number but can also do so by reaching the semi-final if Alcaraz exits in the quarter-finals.
