The Revenue Agency introduces the automatic payment of taxes, contributions and tax installments via IBAN as for electricity and gas bills: fewer errors and bureaucracy for citizens and businesses
For taxes it will be like for electricity and gas bills. For the three-year period 2026-2028, the Revenue Agency foresees the progressive introduction of direct debit from the current account for taxes, contributions and other recurring tax payments. More simplification for citizens and businesses and fewer errors, omissions and delays in payments, with benefits for the state coffers.
How direct debit of taxes from your current account will work
The taxpayer will be able to authorize the Revenue Agency to automatically withdraw the amounts due from their bank or postal account. The novelty mainly concerns recurring payments, paid in installments or already predetermined with a future deadline. The mechanism will be similar to that in use for the domiciliation of domestic users. Once the IBAN has been communicated and the authorization has been provided, the system will be able to generate the F24 form and proceed with the debit on the scheduled date, without the citizen needing to do anything.
Which taxes can be paid automatically
While waiting for the implementation measures, there are indications that suggest an extended use for different types of tax obligations. What should be included? Payments deriving from installments, self-assessed taxes, sums due following checks and amounts linked to the so-called compliance letters sent by the Revenue Agency. A model already exists, used for inheritance tax. In this case the system generates the F24 and proceeds to debit the account indicated by the taxpayer. This pattern could be replicated for more and more taxes and obligations.
New digital services and news coming from the Revenue Agency for citizens
In addition to the direct debit from the current account, other innovations are coming for taxpayers. The Revenue Agency is working on rendering the online personal area is increasingly personalized based on the user’s profile. Thus every taxpayer will be able to have an immediate view of their deadlines, the communications received and the main tax information concerning them. Another novelty concerns the relationship between taxpayers and tax intermediaries. With the so-called «single delegation», citizens and businesses will be able to authorize accountants, consultants and CAFs through a single model, avoiding having to sign separate documents for each individual service. Finally, it will come the pre-compiled tax return has been enhancedso as to “find” more and more data automatically inserted into your model.
What taxpayers should do
At the moment the direct debit of taxes is not yet operational, but when the system comes into operation, interested taxpayers will only have to authorize the use of your IBAN online. One click and from that moment authorized payments can be made automatically at the scheduled deadlines. Therefore less manual practices and simplified procedures.
