From Prince to Count Basie via Max Gazzè and Franco Battiato
Sometimes it snows in April – Prince
A great piece for piano, voice and acoustic guitar. The lyrics concern the memories of Christopher Tracy, Prince’s character in Under the Cherry Moon and expresses his desire to be reunited with Tracy in heaven. Prince has performed the song live quite often over the years, sometimes using it as a final encore to end the show. The song was rediscovered after the death of the Minneapolis genius on April 21, 2016.
April come she will – Simon & Garfunkel
The song was written in 1964 while Paul Simon was in England. The lyrics use the changing nature of the seasons as a metaphor for a girl’s changing moods. An acoustic and very short jewel from the masterpiece album The Sounds Of Silence.
April in Paris – Count Basie
A song composed by Vernon Duke, with lyrics by Yip Harburg, in 1932, for the Broadway musical Walk a Little Faster. Count Basie’s 1955 version, contained in the album of the same name, is the best known and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
April Fool – Patti Smith
The first single taken from the album Banga released in 2012. Splendid song with a warm and enveloping sound, embellished with a high-impact melodic line: “Come be my April fool, Come we’ll break all the rules…”.
April Skies – The Jesus and Mary Chain
One of the numerous pearls from the Glasgow band’s discography. The text talks about a difficult relationship, in which he tries in vain to communicate with his loved one. The song expresses the sense of desolation for a love story that is slowly fading.
Warm April – Franco Battiato
The Maestro’s voice accompanied by intense orchestration. The class of the arrangements and the powerful writing of a brilliant artist. “Light thoughts join the lights and colors in the silence, far away from the clouds”.
April 5th – Talk Talk
From The Color Of Spring, the English band’s third studio album built on a successful combination of jazz and art pop nuances. Guitar, piano and organ are the ingredients of the album in its entirety and of this beautiful song.
Dear April – Frank Ocean
A great single released by the American singer-songwriter and rapper in 2020 who in this song shows the acoustic face of his writing.
April – Jack Lee
A beautiful instrumental piece, full of groove and good vibes, by a superband that includes guitarist Jack Lee, bassist Nathan East and pianist Bob James
April disorder – Max Gazzè
From the album Maximilian a pop piece in its best sense: melodic, refined and ironic enough: “The pollen, like an army of microscopic parachutists, slowly descends over the lawn, tearing the antihistamines to pieces”.
