The fantastic call of the Lucanian Middle Ages

The extraordinary wealth of “pre -modern” Basilicata relives through languages and experiences in which history manages to dialogue with citizens and tourists in an attractive cultural circuit on a global scale

Recover to enhance. Rediscover to give out. Look to the past to generate development.

It is the profound meaning of “fantastic Middle Ages”, a widespread event, but above all a laboratory in which history, identity and tourism intertwine to create new economy and consciousness of belonging, acting as a conscious flywheel to a region that shows that she wants to invest strongly in beauty, knowledge and culture.

Thus started in the imposing castle of Melfi the initiative that aims to transform the medieval Lucanian heritage into an engine of social, economic and tourist regeneration.

The project, which for the President of the Basilicata Region Vito Bardi represents a challenge born from the desire to return centrality to the past and the future of the territory, is part of the wider strategic political design “Medieval Basilicata”, co -financed through the Single National Tourism Fund (Fund) and the Basilicata complementary operational program (POC). An integrated path, therefore, that combines history, scientific research, cultural animation, training, tourism and spirituality, with the aim of creating a high -attractive product. Moreover, as explained by Professor Fulvio delle Donne, scientific director, “fantastic Middle Ages” comes to light to give value to an unparalleled heritage for the imposing load of events, events, innovations that found in Basilicata, a political crossroads in the heart of the Mediterranean, the place of landing and departure of multiform cultures. An epic that had the Normans as protagonists up to Federico II of Swabia, who from Melfi Castle issued, in 1231, the Lex Augustalis, one of the first regulatory codes of European civilization.

The initiative, conceived by the Presidency of the Regional Council and coordinated by the Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation, in collaboration with APT Basilicata, Lucana Film Commission, Normandy Region, inaugurates a stable network between entities and territories. With the signature of the memorandum of understanding between the promoters, Melfi, candidate for the Italian capital of culture 2028, is in fact at the center of a system that will involve villages, associations, schools, museums and volunteers.

“Fantastic Middle Ages” marks the beginning of a path that will live over time thanks also to the enhancement agreement between Re-Gardo, Directorate General Museums of the Ministry of Culture, Museums and Archaeological Parks of Melfi-Venosa and Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019, which aims to promote the very rich Lucanian historical capital linked to the Lombard, Norman-Sveva and Aragonese dominations to return to citizens, travelers, travelers. medieval, through qua-lifted, accessible and participatory experiences. “The castles of Melfi and Lagopesole and the unfinished of venous” explains the general manager of the Ministry of Culture, Massimo Osanna, “will become places where history returns to dialogue with those who live and with those who visit it, revealing the cultural heritage as an engine of social cohesion, enrichment, growth and substantial development”. The thought of the governor Lucano Vito Bardi goes in the same direction: “The agreement is an extraordinary opportunity to bring our history and culture shine at national and international level”.
