The Iranian bet of Trump

The strategy of the American president is to balance the various actors of the Middle Eastern region. Will he succeed?

Is an agreement approaching nuclear power between the United States and Iran? Wednesday, Donald Trump expressed optimism about it. On this occasion, the tenant of the White House also reported that he asked Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid any possible attack on the Iranian atomic structures: a scenario that could make the negotiations derail. “It would be inappropriate to be carried out right now because we are very close to a solution,” said the American president, and then add: “At this moment, I think they want to reach an agreement. And if he could do it, I would save many lives”.

At the moment, according to indiscretions, the point on which Washington and Tehran are discussing is that of the e -revocation of the uranium. According to the CNN, the Iranians would not be willing to give up the tout court enrichment but only to that for military purposes. For its part, Trump wants to absolutely avoid the possibility that the Ayatollah enter the atomic weapon: such a scenario would significantly worry as the Israelis as the Saudis and further destabilize the Middle Eastern region. In addition, the White House points to a severe mechanism of inspections and to dismantle a part of the Iranian nuclear program. Not only that. The CNN has always reported that the president could open to US investments in Tehran’s atomic energy. It would also be considering creating a consortium to which other Middle Eastern countries also access.

Netanyahu, for its part, is notoriously worried about the nuclear interviews between Washington and Tehran. In addition, the Israeli premier is irritated by the fact that Trump recently loosened the penalties to the Damascus Filoturco regime. On the other hand, Israel also knows that, before starting the negotiations, the American president has significantly put the Ayatollah under pressure. And that, in his recent visit to Riad, he explicitly hoped that Saudi Arabia enters sooner or later in Abraham agreements. This means that Trump is trying to build a balance between the various actors in the region.

On the other hand, his idea of a “golden age for the Middle East” It is based on the belief that each actor, if he wants to achieve something, must give up something else. It is therefore in this perspective that the White House is trying to carve out a role of stabilizer in the area. The same massif agreement on the armaments between the United States and Saudi Arabia must be (at least in part) inserted in a framework of counterbalance against Iran. Finally, it is not even excluded that the dossier of nuclear negotiations intersects with that of Gaza: we do not forget that the Khomeinist regime is, historically, one of Hamas’ main financiers. In this sense, it is good to remember that both on Gaza and Iranian nuclear power is, for the White House, the same person: Steve Witkoff.

The overall situation remains, for the moment, characterized by various unknowns. We will see what developments will be recorded in the coming weeks.
