The theme looks to art, but it is power that steals the show: between an armored guest list and cumbersome sponsors, the 2026 Met Gala is preparing to be as spectacular as it is discussed.
The most awaited event in global fashion is back, and no it’s not about The Devil Wears Prada 3. The 2026 Met Gala, taking place on May 4th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, brings back into the spotlight what is now much more than a fundraiser.
The theme of the Met Gala 2026
For this edition, the Costume Institute chooses a title that sounds almost programmatic, Costume Art. The starting point is the dressed body, observed as an artistic surface, a place of stratification between aesthetics, identity and representation. It is not just about historical clothes or haute couture, but about a broader reflection that crosses eras and visual languages, from classical sculpture to contemporary avant-garde.
The dress code, “Fashion Is Art”, is deliberately open and almost theoretical. The expected result is a less narrative and more conceptual red carpet, where the reference is not so much the costume as the work. We thus expect a more marked use of sculptural silhouettes, unconventional materials and explicit quotes from the art world.
Beyoncé, host of the evening with Anna Wintour (and Lauren Sànchez)
Leading the evening remains, as always, Anna Wintour, immutable presence and silent director of the entire Met system. Next to her, three co-chairs who clearly describe the transversal nature of the event. Beyoncé brings with her the weight of global pop culture, Nicole Kidman represents the link with cinema and Hollywood tradition, while Venus Williams once again introduces sport as an aesthetic and narrative territory.
Alongside the official hosts, the role of the patrons is increasingly visible. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are among the main supporters of the evening, helping to strengthen that bond, not always free of tension, between fashion and big capital.
The guests at the Met Gala 2026
Like every year, the guest list remains armored, but the previews already outline some trajectories. Among the most anticipated names are Kim Kardashian, now a structural presence of the contemporary Met, and Hailey Bieber, increasingly central in the fashion-social story.
There is also talk of a possible return of Rihanna, the true unofficial queen of the Met, together with Lady Gaga and Harry Styles, three figures who over the years have redefined the very concept of the “gala look”. Alongside the big names, there is growing attention towards artists, emerging designers and hybrid figures, difficult to place in just one category. This is where the Met continues to renew itself, more than in the already established stars.
Zendaya’s absence and the politicians’ no against Bezos
If presences build the story, absences amplify it. The most significant is that of Zendaya, one of the most sophisticated interpreters of the Met theme in recent years. His failure to participate, linked to cinematographic commitments, interrupts a sequence of appearances that had contributed to bringing the costume back towards a more narrative and philological dimension.
It’s not the only defection. Some political and institutional figures would have chosen not to participate, fueling an increasingly present debate on the balance between culture, sponsorships and public representation.
