The two faces of Sinner in Paris First he suffers, then Cerundolo dominates

Jannik was in physical difficulty against the Argentine in the first set, then in the decisive moment he brought out his best and flew in the second set. He will face Shelton in the quarterfinals

Another record. For the first time Jannik Sinner qualifies for the quarterfinals at the ATP1000 in Paris. But it was a difficult evening and the South Tyrolean had to sweat a lot to overtake the Argentinian Fran cesco Cerundolo. In the first set Sinner also seemed to be in physical difficulty, he himself admitted at the end of the match that he wasn’t exactly fresh and that “the only thing that matters now is to recover your physical energy for tomorrow’s match”. Comntro Cerundolo the same thing happened in Rome, with Sinner in difficulty in the first set and then absolute dominator, but now the legs of the number two in the world are tired from the many tournaments played around the world. Sinner will face the American Shelton in the quarterfinals, but after the match with Cerundolo some doubts remain about his physical condition.

Ups and downs

In the first set the blue started well, immediately breaking the Argentinian’s serve, but then the match progressed in an anomalous way with four consecutive games in which neither was able to hold their serve. Until the decisive game: Sinner leading 6-5 on Cerundolo’s serve pulled off two uncatchable shots for the Argentine, thus canceling the too many errors made previously. At certain moments the South Tyrolean seemed almost demotivated. Then after winning the first set the real Sinner returned and at that point there was no more match for Cerundolo. Jannik immediately broke the Argentine’s serve to go 3-0, in the end he left only one game to the Argentine in the second set closing 6-1. As the South Tyrolean’s pace increased, the Argentinian’s errors increased. Sinner finished with 71% first-balls and 12 winners. In Paris Sinner has no shortage of motivation, given that by winning the tournament at least for a week he would once again become number one in the world given Alcaraz’s early (and unpredictable) exit from the scene. In the match with Cerundolo, however, there were some moments of confusion due to lack of concentration and tiredness and also a problem of adaptability to the new surface in Paris, much slower than that of last year. So much so that Jannik commented: “It feels like playing on clay.”
