They supported ISIS and Al Qaeda in Italy

At dawn on Tuesday 24 December the Carabinieri of the ROS, a special operational group, executed a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the Bologna court at the request of the anti-terrorism department of the Emilian prosecutor’s office. Five young people, all of foreign origin, were arrested because they were held responsible «for having been part of a terrorist association dedicated to the promotion, consolidation and strengthening of global terrorist groups al-Qaeda And Islamic State». The five young people arrested are residents of Bologna, Milan, Udine And Perugia. According to investigations, they supported terrorist organizations precisely from their cities of residence. This is yet another operation carried out by the Italian authorities who once again demonstrate their exceptional value in the fight against Islamic terrorism. Four of the suspects are accused of having created a terrorist group inspired by the Salafism-jihadismwith a takfirist vision, called “Da’wa Italy” (translatable into Arabic as invitation. Through the spread of jihadist propaganda and the recruitment of new supporters, the group would have shown itself determined to join the jihadist militias active in Africa and in the “Siraq”. As regards the fifth individual, brother of the main suspect, it is hypothesized that a process of radicalization began under the influence of his sister, who played a central role, which is why he is accused of “training with the aim of potential recruitment into terrorist organizations”. Initially, attention was focused on the figure of a young woman of Pakistani origins, raised and domiciled in Bologna, who allegedly persuaded another girl, of Algerian origins and resident in Spoleto, thanks to his fervent commitment and constant recruitment activity. Subsequent investigations led to the identification of other members of the group, including a boy who grew up in Milan, who apparently left to join the jihadist militias active in Horn of Africaand another man of Turkish origins, resident for some time between the provinces of Gorizia and Udine. The operation comes after last December 17th the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosichaired the National Committee for Public Order and Security at the Interior Ministry.

Between 2015 and 2024, 820 people were removed from the country because they were deemed a threat to state security

During the meeting, particular focus was dedicated to the measures implemented for the Jubilee of the Catholic Church, which will attract millions of pilgrims and visitors to Rome. In this context, to strengthen the surveillance and control activities of the territory, in particular at the Vatican and the historic centre, the Basilicas and other sensitive sites will be used every day, in addition to the operators who already provide service in the Capital on a daily basis, as well as 700 law enforcement reinforcement units. During the meeting, the situation of public order and security in Italy was also analysed. From 1 January to 30 November 2024, crimes decreased by 1.8% compared to the same period of the previous year with a decrease, in particular, in voluntary homicides (-13.1%). In terms of combating crime, the results of the “high impact” joint operations at the railway stations and the highest risk areas of the major Italian cities were then examined, interventions which are added to the daily actions to monitor the territory. 1,304 those carried out from 1 January to 30 November 2024 with the overall use of 45,113 units of the Police Force: 321,564 people identified, 566 subjects arrested and 3,817 those reported, and 457 foreigners expelled of which 85 for terrorism (given as of 12.22.2024) while in 2023 they had been 77. It is clear that the ongoing conflict in Gaza has to do with this increase even if Italy has been fighting the phenomenon for some time in a very effective manner, so much so that between 2015 and 2024 820 people were removed from the country because they were deemed a threat to state security.

There will be 260 law enforcement workers injured during 2024

On the public order front, 11,556 significant demonstrations took place in the 11 months of 2024, +12.1% compared to the previous year. Critical issues were recorded in 299 cases, a decrease of 14.8%. 260 law enforcement workers were injured, an increase of 195.5% compared to the same period in 2023. In this regard, as stated in the press note, Minister Matteo Piantedosi once again wanted to thank all the women and the men of the State Police, the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza for their great commitment in managing street events, highlighting the professionalism and balance that always distinguishes them in delicate and complex. All qualities from which Italian citizens benefit who should condemn without hesitation those who attack the police forces during the many (too many) demonstrations that we have seen in this ugly 2024.
