The one caused by yesterday’s elections in Greenland is a small political earthquake. The best results were in fact achieved by the parties currently in the opposition: the center -right deployment of the Democrats and the independence of Naleraq. Both are in favor of the independence of the island from Denmark, while differing in the methods. The former has a gradualist approach, while the latter hopes quick times, while aiming for a closer collaboration with the United States. Well, the Democrats arrived in first place and Naleraq per second. Of the third position, the premier’s party had to be satisfied MĂște Bourup Aegede: let’s talk about the social democratic deployment inuit ataqatigit.
Although it was also played on internal politics issues, the election campaign took place in the framework of growing geopolitical tensions. It is not a mystery that Donald Trump has set his eyes on Greenland, not even completely excluding his acquisition military manu. It is very probably a hyperbole that however clearly suggests the strategy of the island in the eyes of the United States. Beyond the raw materials of which it is rich, Greenland is in fact a privileged access door to the Arctic: a region in which, according to the Pentagon last year, military cooperation between Russia and China has recently strengthened. The ambitions of Trump As for the largest island in the world, they must therefore be inserted in this wider picture.
Pending the formation of the new government, it will first be necessary to understand how Greenland will implement the process of independence from Denmark. Secondly, it will be interesting to understand what his relations with the Trump administration will be. In fact, it cannot be excluded that, although perhaps not ending acquired by the United States, the island decides to strengthen its relations with Washington anyway, cooling those with Beijing. This is probably the dossier considered more urgent, at the moment, by the White House, as demonstrated also by what happened in Panama. It is therefore likely that, in the coming months, Trump The negotiations with the new executive of Greenland: negotiations that could take place in parallel with the independence process of the island from Denmark.
Obviously it is still too early to make forecasts. However, who knows: the recent elections in Greenland could be the harbinger of some geopolitical turning point. Predictably, the White House will not remain to look at the window. The competition with Beijing, they think in the oval study, remains the maximum priority: in Latin America, in Ukraine, in the Middle East and, yes, also in the Arctic.
