The center of Leipzig It transformed in a few moments into a scene of panic, sirens and bodies on the ground. A car hit several pedestrians in the central area of the German city, causing two deaths and at least twenty injured, some of them in serious conditions. The driver was arrested by the police, while the motive and exact dynamics still remain to be clarified.
The accident occurred in the afternoon of Monday 4 May 2026in the area of Grimmaische Strasseone of the busiest pedestrian arteries in the city center, not far from Augustusplatz and the market square. According to initial reconstructions, the vehicle entered the pedestrian area at high speed, overwhelming the people present along the way.
Running in the pedestrian area
The vehicle involved was a Volkswagen SUVdescribed by various sources as a gray or silver Taigo, now under examination by investigators. According to initial information reported by local media, the car traveled a few hundred meters in the pedestrian area before stopping. Some witnesses spoke of a confused and violent scene, with the car damaged and people rescued on the ground.
The chief of the Leipzig fire brigade, Axel Schuhconfirmed that among the injured there were at least two people in serious condition. Numerous ambulances, rescue teams and crisis units responded to the scene to assist injured people and witnesses.
The mayor: «We are devastated»
The mayor of Leipzig confirmed the heaviest toll, Burkhard Jungwhich spoke of two victims and the arrest of the person driving. “We are devastated,” declared the mayor, expressing solidarity with the families of the victims and referring to the police and prosecutor’s investigations to clarify what really happened.
At the moment, the authorities have not officially indicated the motive. According to some journalistic reconstructions, the driver showed signs of instability at the time of the arrest, but this is an element yet to be verified in the investigation. The police, for now, are maintaining the utmost confidentiality about the circumstances of the incident.
