Ukraine and Gaza, the hypocrisy of politics

Everyone is for peace. But only in words. Because in fact many do exactly the opposite

Politics is said to be the art of compromise, however the more I observe the things of our day, the more it seems to me that politics is the art of hiding reality behind a veil of hypocrisy. In words, the leaders are ready to defend the principles, in fact they are much less. The thought in these days goes to the two wars to which we have been witnessing impotent for years, in Ukraine and Gaza. We begin precisely with the latter and with the positions of what we are used to considering the civil world, where he lodies respect for human rights. Europe and America have repeatedly invited Israel to stop the bombings in the strip, urged Hamas to free the hostages kidnapped on 7 October two years ago and to lay down weapons. The horror of tens of thousands of deaths, including many children, has certainly not left public opinion indifferent.

Words, not made

“We must put an end to this terrible massacre, recognizing the state of Palestine,” says many Western politicians. Too bad that the declarations of principle does not follow any concrete fact. In fact, after invoking a respite, the same countries continue to allow the sending of weapons to the belligerents. The United States, Germany, Great Britain, France, Spain, despite the positions in favor of a ceasefire, have never totally interrupted the supplies of defense and offense systems. It is difficult to stop a war by sending cannons. Above all, it seems impossible to reconcile a position in favor of peace with the decision to continue selling ammunition to the army to whom you ask not to shoot.

At the same time, it is surprised to discover that some of the countries that promise Ukraine to continue to support their resistance against the Russian invasion, then they are the first to reduce the supplies of armaments. Kiev has long complained of not only from soldiers to be committed to the front, but also of missiles, planes, tanks and bullets. It is difficult to resist if the arsenals are empty. Impossible to reject the enemy if the blows to shoot must be rationed. Still, some countries that have autonomized willing themselves, proposing to replace America if Donald Trump abandoned Ukraine to their destiny, have cut the armaments supplies.

The art of hypocrisy

From France, whose president Macron does not spend day without reiterating the support in Volodymyr Zelensky, it seems that ammunition has not arrived for over a year and a half. And also Great Britain, struggling with an economic crisis of not easy solution, would skimp up the sending. As for Germany, in words the new chancellor promises to allow Ukraine to hit Russia in depth, or to allow the use of long -haul missiles. In fact, however, in Kiev the bullets made available to troops continue to arrive with the dropper.

In short, the manifest solidarity and the declarations of principle referred to in Europe, but in general in what we are used to considering the West, are prodigal, often collide with the reality of the facts, which is much less solidarity and very contradictory. The EU and America are against the war in Gaza, but they do nothing to prevent the Middle East from being a pulveric padded with weapons. On the contrary, Europe and allies ensure support for Ukraine, but commitments do not go beyond generic reassurances.
Therefore, more than the art of compromise, politics seems to me the art of hypocrisy. One thing is said to like public opinion, but then what is convenient is done.
