Tragedy in New Orleans, in the southern United States, where this morning a vehicle hit the crowd on Bourbon Street, in the French Quarter of New Orleans around 03.15 local time (10.15 Italian time), after which the driver got out of the vehicle and started shooting a weapon. The police returned fire and killed him. Authorities report at least twelve dead and around 30 injured. The victims are transported to local hospitals. Emergency crews and law enforcement are actively working at the scene and authorities are urging the public to avoid the area.
The situation remains very fluid and these numbers are subject to change as more information becomes available. Investigators are working to determine the motive and whether the suspect acted alone. “All I saw was a truck crashing into everyone on the left side of the sidewalk in Bourbon. A body flew at me and I also heard gunshots,” said Kevin Garcia, 22, speaking to CNN shortly after the incident.
It is currently impossible to determine the motive which recalls the many massacres carried out by Islamic extremists over the last few years, see what happened in Berlin in 2016, but also in Nice and Barcelona without forgetting what happened in Magdeburg last December 20th at the street market in Christmas where a 50-year-old Saudi man broke into a car, mowing down the crowd, killing five people, including a 9-year-old child, and injuring another 230. At the time of writing we learn that the New Orleans attack has been classified as an act of terrorism.
