The eighth day of the Venice International Film Festival brings to the Lido a combination of interpretative intensity and great international cinema: It’s time for Duse by Pietro Marcello e In The Hand of Dante by Julian Schnabeltwo films that respectively explore the life of a legend of the Italian theater and the mystery of a historical manuscript.
On the red carpet of Duse, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi conquers everyone with an interpretation already defined by many as worthy of the Volpi Cup. The film, the third Italian title in competition for the Golden Lion, tells the last years of Eleonora Duse, between period reconstructions, historical films and creative freedom. Bruni Tedeschi embodies the diva that survives the First World War, to the pressures of D’Annunzio and the changes of a world rapidly changing, returning to the public the strength and fragility of an artist who starts from the theater: “The work was for her pure oxygen”, said the actress at the press conference today.
In The Hand of Dantedirected by Julian Schnabel and presented on the Lido with a large group of stars – Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, John Malkovich and even Martin Scorsese – tells the story of A writer in charge of finding and authenticating the original manuscript of the Divine Comedychased by a mysterious killer. Schnabel, awarded with the Cartier Glory of the Filmmaker Award, brings to the screen a story that intertwines literature, suspense and reflection on the value of memory and art.
The eighth day of the Festival thus confirms Venice’s ability to alternate intense biopic and large international productions, between master’s acting and narration that merges history, fiction and moral depth. The Lido once again becomes the scene of a cinema that excites, stimulates and surprises, offering the public a complete overview of the contemporary variations of the film story.
