The Italian preceded Robinson and Vonn, for her it is the twenty-seventh victory in the World Cup. “Today’s pain is tomorrow’s fuel”
Eleven months after the victory in the Cortina free climb (18 January) Sofia Goggia triumphs again in a world cup race (the twenty-seventh of his career). The athlete from Bergamo he won the super-G in Val d’Isere after an almost perfect race, preceding Alice Robinson by 15 cents and her friend and rival Lindsay Vonn by 4: “He taught me a lesson” Vonn applauds her at the finish line. Goggia replies: “I wasn’t amazing, I held out a lot in the upper part. But it was enough, the first victory finally arrived.” The Italian said that she cried for the mistake she made in the free climb the day before which had jeopardized her victory, but that she took inspiration from that mistake to return to success. “Yesterday was a hard day for me, I cried for an hour because of the wasted opportunity – Goggia said to Rai microphones -. I felt pain in my soul and heart. As I also wrote in some messages to Gasperini, who is now the coach of Roma, but he is a person who has given so much to the city of Bergamo and I am still in contact with him: today’s pain is tomorrow’s fuel“.
The race
This time Sofia didn’t do anything wrong, fast curves like she knows how to draw and great speedwithout any problems due to the wind which affected the race and also forced the organizers to make a short interruption. In any case, the start of the season seemed encouraging for the Bergamo native who has above all in mind the February match at the Olimpia delle Tofane where she will be awarded the gold medal of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics: “When I got to the end I wasn’t convinced, I skied with a lot of margin at the top. But it was enough, let’s bring this victory home and that’s okay. In St. Moritz Lindsey Vonn gave us the wake-up call and forced us all to raise our game. I’m more interested in starting from that rather than dwelling on today’s race, where I know I had a margin: today with this victory I gave myself a nice Christmas present, but yesterday I gave it to the others because sometimes I’m generous. When I get to the podium, Alberto Tomba sends me messages of congratulations and writes to me: those little presents… Now for Christmas, then I’ll be there in Semmering and Kranjska Gora in the giant slalom, in January maybe I’ll focus on speed. We will see”.
