In the historic heart of Seoul, the new flagship of the Korean brand celebrates the meeting between the legacy of tradition and the provocative spirit of contemporary perfumery.
In Seoul, the past is never that far from the present. Among futuristic skyscrapers, experimental architecture and neighborhoods in constant transformation, places survive in which history retains a tangible presence, through buildings, materials and traditions that continue to dialogue with the contemporary. A silent conversation between apparently distant worlds, but deeply linked to the same cultural identity, which finds one of its most fascinating expressions in Bukchon, the historic district of the South Korean capital.
Right here, among the characteristic homes hanokBorn to Stand Out has inaugurated its fourth flagship store in Seoul, transforming a traditional building into a space where Korean aesthetic heritage meets the provocative language of contemporary perfumery. Founded in 2022 by Jun Lim, the brand has built its identity around the desire to subvert conventions, reinterpreting the cultural references of its country through a non-conformist sensibility.
Where old Seoul meets contemporary Seoul
«The concept behind this new flagship is the meeting between Hanyang, the name by which ancient Seoul was known, and the contemporary city», says Jun Lim. «From the entrance, where we are welcomed by some of the oldest and most traditional furnishings, the route gradually takes the visitor towards modern Korea».
The original architecture of the hanok, with its wooden beams, pillars and internal courtyard, becomes the starting point of a project that does not seek to nostalgically reconstruct the past, but to relate it to the present. Furniture and objects dating back to the Joseon dynasty coexist with metal surfaces, sculptural elements and contemporary interventions, giving rise to an environment in which different eras and sensibilities continually confront each other.
Bukchon’s choice responds precisely to this intention. «It is one of the areas richest in history in Seoul, where an important part of the traditional architectural heritage is still alive», explains the founder, underlining the value of a neighborhood capable of maintaining its identity within a constantly evolving metropolis.
Contrast as an aesthetic language
What defines the character of the space is above all the relationship between opposing elements. White dialogues with intense red, the brand’s distinctive colour, while essential shapes and contemporary materials are combined with irregularities and surfaces marked by time.
“Our brand is based on contrast and rebellion,” says Lim. «We have transferred this philosophy into architecture through the tension between different elements. There are bold colors alongside more discreet shades, white and red, old and new. It is precisely this tension that translates the values of the brand into the design of the space.”
A contrast that also belongs to the visual identity of the Born to Stand Out fragrances. The white bottles, inspired by the tradition of Korean porcelain, become the support for red writing and deliberately provocative names, transforming an object with classic shapes into a declaration of creative independence.
Saint Petal and the restless beauty of flowers
The same search for contrasts crosses the olfactory universe of the brand and finds a new interpretation in Saint Petalthe latest fragrance from the Extrait Extrême collection created by perfumer Jordi Fernández.
“Saint Petal was born from the idea of a burning violet,” says Lim. «We imagined seemingly perfect flowers, beautiful on the outside, which when stepped on reveal something completely different. Their most naked, raw and profound side emerges, with earthy, resinous and animal facets.”
The composition explores this duality through violet leaves, sambac jasmine, coffee and incense, accompanied by woody and leather accords. The floral delicacy thus loses its innocence to reveal a more intense, almost restless dimension.
