Netflix’s new psychological thriller from the creator of Homeland

The Beast in Me, an eight-episode series produced by Jodie Foster and created by Howard Gordon and Gabe Rotter, debuts on Netflix on Thursday 13 November. Starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys, it’s a psychological thriller about attraction and the dark side we all hide.

A psychological game of attraction

The protagonist is Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), a successful writer who retired after her son’s death. She lives alone in pain and no longer writes, but then a new neighbor arrives, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), and his life changes. But Nile is a real estate tycoon with a dark past: his wife disappeared and he was the main suspect. A psychological game of attraction begins, but Aggie decides to find out who this fascinating man really is and writes a book about it.

From Homeland And The Americans

It’s not the first time Claire Danes with Howard Gordon: with the showrunner he shared the years of Homelandin which she played the troubled CIA agent Carrie Mathison. With The Beast in Meplays a different character, but always suspended between truth and lies, between what he appears and what he actually is. Matthew Rhys instead, it is fresh from the success of The Americans as Philip Jenningsand with Danes creates an acting duel which, according to the first reviews, it’s worth the view alone.

The influence of Johnny Cash

Howard Gordon he explained that the title recalls the song of the same name by Johnny Cash: the song talks about the dark part we carry inside, that beast that makes us human precisely because we recognize it. «Whether it is Monica Lewinsky, Amanda Knox, Nile Jarvis or anyone else, sometimes we are led to make assumptions” explains the showrunner. «But when we are forced to look at the situation from oneanother perspectivedo we have the humility and compassion to listen and review the narrative?”
