“Rumor” price 789 $, free stolink and sun charging: but the Tesla Pi Phone does not exist. Meanwhile, Spacex aims at Direct-to-Cell with Echostar
Price set at 789 dollars, there are those who imagine it capable of connecting directly to Starlink, those who dream of letting him load the sun, those who are ready to undermine cryptocurrencies with a tap on the screen and who, even, already sees Neuralink integrated us to command it with thought. It is the phantom Tesla Pi Phonethe most discussed hi-tech object ever existed … without ever existing.
A myth that started from some online renderings in 2021 and bounced up to 2025 as an obsession with feed disruption: YouTube full of video concepts, social networks full of speculation and technological heads forced to answer the only question that matters: “But will Elon Musk really launch a phone?”.
Musk, the only one who doesn’t believe it
The answer, so far, has always been the same. Musk said it in several interviews, including a podcast with Joe Rogan: “No, we are not making a phone”. Point. Tesla has never confirmed or announced anything. The reasoning is linear: the company’s products (electric cars and energy) already dialogue with iOS and Android. You don’t need a new device, unless Apple or Google decide to cut Tesla out of their platforms.
Still, the idea of a “Musk’s phone” continues to circulate because it is perfectly consistent with the Muschian narrative: colonies on Mars, reusable rockets, chips in the brain. How not to imagine that, at a certain point, does the smartphone also arrive “for Marziani”?
The reality show: nothing more phone
The truth is that the so -called Tesla Pi Phone does not exist. No prototype, no ad, no roadmap. To push the myth they thought above all concepts and rendering hyperviral that depicted a futuristic device, perfect for the Tesla brand. But everything stops there.
Today, the only Tesla brand phones for sale are Android Rugged produced by third companies that have obtained the license of use of the name, such as the Tesla Explr 9 sold in Europe and Asia. Nothing to do with Musk, nothing to do with Palo Alto.
Because Musk doesn’t need a phone
Tesla is concentrated on something else: expansion of the production of electric cars, development of batteries and energy systems, Starlink growth and its global network. Opening a direct front against Apple, Samsung and Google on the land of the smartphone would not only be an industrial gamble, but also a distraction from strategic priorities.
The paradox is that the pHone continues to exist as a “narrative object”, as a symbol of the imagined future than that of the one built. It is a digital pop phenomenon that feeds videos, posts and discussions, and that shows how much Musk and Tesla have become cultural brands, not only technological.
So will it ever exist?
Maybe, but not now. There is no more phone, no concrete plan. There are only fans, social mythology and the feeling that, if one day an interplanetary smartphone really serves, well … Musk would be the first to build it.
In all this, at the beginning of the month Spacex concluded a $ 17 billion agreement to acquire wireless frequencies from Echostarwith the aim of developing the “Direct to Cell” service. In practice, the common smartphones will be able to connect directly to the satellites, without the need for terrestrial infrastructures. A real and tangible step, much more concrete than the fantasies on the Pi Phone.
