Twenty-five years after the release of the first film directed by Peter Jackson, the Lord of the Rings saga continues to live on with new productions, special collections and a Middle-earth that has never ceased to enchant generations of spectators.
There’s something about it The Lord of the Rings that stands the test of time. Perhaps because, behind dragons, hobbits and imaginary kingdoms, the story constructed by JRR Tolkien speaks above all of friendship, fear, courage and the desire to belong. Or because Middle-earth, more than a simple fantasy universe, has over the years become an emotional and cultural place shared by entire generations.
In 2026, the film saga of The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary, commemorating the theatrical debut of the first film directed by Peter Jackson in December 2001.
Since that moment, the film trilogy based on Tolkien’s works has redefined contemporary fantasy imagery, transforming itself into a global phenomenon capable of spanning different eras, languages and platforms. The adventures of Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf and the Fellowship of the Ring have won over millions of viewers, accumulating a total of 17 Oscars and over six billion dollars at the global box office. A success that has consecrated the saga as one of the most influential in the history of contemporary cinema.
But the real goal achieved by The Lord of the Rings is perhaps that of having managed to remain alive well beyond the big screen. Twenty-five years later, Middle-earth continues to expand through new productions, dedicated collections and increasingly transversal fan communities. Among the most anticipated projects there is also The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Golluma new cinematic chapter scheduled for 2027 which will bring one of the most enigmatic characters of the Tolkien universe back to the screen.
The Italian celebrations for the twenty-fifth anniversary also involve the world of illustration and design thanks to the collaboration between Warner Bros. Discovery and Giovanni Esposito, known online as Quasirosso. The illustrator has signed a celebratory artwork that tells the moment in which the Fellowship of the Ring takes its first steps towards the unknown, uniting different creatures and worlds within the same destiny. Nature, shadows, light and hidden details thus become the symbol of that idea of collective adventure which still makes this saga profoundly contemporary today.
Alongside the artistic universe, there is also space for new collaborations dedicated to collectors. Moleskine has launched a special collection inspired by the atmosphere of Middle-earth with notebooks, pens, pins and accessories that reinterpret iconic scenes and characters from the saga. At the same time, LEGO presented the new set dedicated to Minas Tirith, made up of over eight thousand pieces and designed as a display object for the most passionate fans.
In a landscape dominated by remakes, sequels and expanded universes, Middle-earth retains something rare: the feeling of still being a place to return to. Not only out of nostalgia, but to rediscover that same idea of wonder, friendship and adventure that made the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring immortal.
